Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    Brilliant.

I've stated I have an interest and why.

You just give a flippant remark.

There is an upside to this. Your input lengthens the thread and maybe it appears to be more relevant because of that but you still keep dodging.

You seem to be a troll. No interest but stirring the debate all the same, what possesses you to do that? Some that cloud sync have put their opposite opinions/workarounds and left but there are a couple of Pit Bulls that just can't seem to unlock their jaws.....

You nailed that one for sure!

The vast majority of icloud users have no clue about what it is, how it functions and they never end up using it. I've got a few icloud dummies around me at work.

Aside from Barney's solution, downgrading is also a major option if you want to bring back local sync.

I've been on mac since OS 9. I've never felt the need to downgrade and I won't downgrade on principle for now. Not all the upgrades have been perfect but up until the "work in progress" called Mavericks, there was a sense of incremental improvement in OSX.

I've got a lot of money tied up in Apple products. I still assume they're going to fix this version and bring back local sync in the end. If not, then as a consumer, I'm not giving apple any more of my money. So I welcome 3rd party solutions to this issue.

Give us some attribution for that and it might be credible, but I already know that it's just your opinion.

    Thanks for playing.

Why do you all assume everyone is an idiot?

Where do you get that from? Is there a link we can follow? To at least more than a handful of the hundreds of millions of iCloud users? Intrested to read.

    Thanks

I don't think icloud users are idiots. But the ones around me sure have some really amazing misconceptions about cloud computing though.

Here's a link to some useless icloud demographic info.

Then why do you say, they have "no clue about what it is, how it functions?"

I always considered someone with no clue an idiot.

Perhaps it is just you that has no clue as to their capabilities and understanding.

You're probably right. It's quite possible a lot of them are very capable and well-versed in cloud computing. It's equally possible many aren't.

I think Apple with their amazingly subtle branding (see image from apple site) and in-OS pursuasion preys upon the non-technical. It's incredibly easy to sign up for a free icloud account right from your system preferences! Slick. I personally won't drink the koolaid but hats off to those who do if they're happy.

Losing local sync and moving users to the cloud is a symptom of the continuing dumbing down of OS X into a thin client.

Mavericks as it stands at is a work in progress and if you're on 10.9.1 you're basically a developer testing the beta.

You get what you pay for with this upgrade.
