Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

What use does a single user Dav system have for a conflict resolver?

There are no conflicts to resolve!

Can anyone tell me, how my 10 year old nephew should sync his iPhone (iOS 7.0.3) contacts with his father

    's Mac (10.9.1).

At present he'll have to use one of the solutions posted assuming you or he is savvy enough to set it up.

Or he'll have to roll back to ML assuming your Mac will allow it.

He cannot get an Apple ID because therefor he needs to be at least 13 years old. Without an Apple ID, he cannot use iCloud and without iCloud, he cannot Sync his contacts.

Probably for securitys sake. He's stuck here I'm afraid unless a trusted guardian can do it on his behalf.

Me neither. Oh and be prepared for a barrage of criticism about a 10 year old possessing an iPhone from the usual suspects, it won't be long............

That sounds like a good use for OS X Server and the Profile Manager to configure the iPhone for his son: http://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/#profile-manager

Barney-15E's workaround should do the trick, but if you are willing/want to use iCloud or similar, then I should go back to Apple (preferably on a person to person basis - not via email) and ask them to resolve the issue for you. After all it is *their* default option that users should sync via iCloud.

    ... on the syncing issue:

I have tried Baikal, I have purchased the Apple Server App and I have ownCloud installed. I never got Baikal to work as it is just to technical and I must be making mistakes in the configuration process. The Apple Server, I never got it to do what I wanted it to do. ownCloud sort of works, but no contact syncing with iOS 7. Short, so far nothing worked for me.

.... still hoping for Apple to reconsider bringing local syncing back.

for the first time I purchased a Samsung phone. I might convert everything to Windows.

    PS

there is the FileMaker Pro solution, which, with its mobile App can import the entire FileMaker file on to your mobile devices.

When I sync my iPhone and Mac or iPad and Mac, sometimes a window would pop up showing two windows of an event or contact, one from the Mac and one from the iOS device.  It asks me to chose which to accept.

      aps.

I've never actually "synced" my iPad or iPhone on Mavericks--it just does it on its own. I have never gotten a request for conflict resolution. I guess my question would be, how do you "sync" contacts and calendars?

To a lesser extent it's a technical issue (workflow/ handling). The concern against the enforced iCloud use apply primarily political questions: data security, privacy... Mr. Cook, Mr. Ive: Don't be evil!

And you think this is actually more secure with JAVA as

a basis for all apps and Google looking over your

shoulder at every move you make.

Windows 8 is heavilly cloud based if you haven't noticed.

And steadily moving further in that direction.

For the billion and oneth time, YOU ARE NOT FORCED TO USE ICLOUD!

iCloud is just one of at least half-a-dozen syncing services you can freely choose to use instead.

Furthermore to assess or mitigate the security risk you are afraid of you need to multiply the severity of having your email addresses and personal diary accessible by the bogey-men by the probability of them being professionally hacked. Based on the numbers of actual icloud hacks (as opposed to politically biassed experiments in social engineering hacks) ...

I make that (very low severity) multiplied by (almost zero probility based on history) = pretty low risk indeed.

And again you are NOT forced to use icloud.

(By the way I mitigate my risk by keeping my addresses and calendar (icloud) separate from my webmail provider (Outlook.com)

    Hello,

i my nephew needs to sync his contacts. He is 10 years old. What do you recommend? He does not have an Apple ID or a Google ID because therefore you need to be at least 13 years old....

Setup an AppleID or Google ID for him in his name which you manage and control until he is old enough for you to transfer the account to him.

... and if you are talking iphone to Mac, how can he have an iphone without an Apple-ID??  That would be zero apps, a pretty unlikely scenario with kids, surely?
