Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Apple delete my message but ok, got a mail with a hint to the forumguidlines, I am not allowed to post a link to a poll or petition.

    Here again:

@Csound1 forget that. Apple never replies any feedback, it seems they disregard the feedback. It is a shame at all.

Try to make a light here... NOT ALLOWED URL - just search for the petition on the web, you will find that easy.

It may not be that they don't listen to feedback. But you can surely imagine the amount of feedback they get given the number of products on their books? It can be difficult to get to all of it.

Remember they are a very secretive company too.

    @ tekknosaurus:

I was just searching for your post, since I received it via mail, but couldn't find it here any more -

I know and signed that petition, it started shortly after Mavericks was released end of October 2013 -

What I'm really wondering is, that until now only 5280 people signed it - 10.000 are needed - although I doubt, it would help

Comparing that petition with this thread with 198.960 views and 2.264 Replies and all the countless other threads out there - it seems 'a bit' helpless to me ...

Not enough interest and thereby pressure concerning this subject - unfortunately!

And Apple has other interests ...

Sale of goods act 1974 does not provide for changing your mind having bought the item and then decided it is not what you wanted. You would have a great deal of trouble demonstrating to a small claims court judge that a new macbook pro was not fit for purpose or not of merchantable quality on that basis. If you were told at the point of sale that it does support USB sync, preferably in a written spec sheet, you might have a case for mis-selling, but not against Apple.

Only 5000 people signed it in three months? Must be a serious problem?.

    really extraordinarily interesting -

I didn't link that petition site, just mentioned it's name - which some 2 or 3 minutes later was erased -

    really interesting -

They state clearly on the feedback screens that they do collate the information, and that they cannot respond individually.  They will have data analysis software that will show trends in feedback which is why everyone on here says if you don't like something don't shout at us, feedback to Apple.

I can't think of a company that publishes all the complaints it receives.

Yepp, I was wondering too - just 5k people signs.

But - some don´t want to sing something, some keeps on the old OS and other never find the petition. And it doesnt have an effect on the stupid fail of cancelation of the sync.

Man can just spread the word...

Of course we are. It is a fallacy to assume that users never wish to "upgrade" their systems. It is not logical to tell users seeking assistance that they should just continue forward without ever installing follow-on Apple OSes.

Apple made it clear by not mentioning USB at all?

People have brought iOS devices & Macs for many years, all of which connected and synced via USB, a single knowledge base article barely covers making the change public. The change is not visible in the marketing materials for 10.9 either.

Since several people have reported Apples own support staff (in Stores and via Applecare) have not known about this change it seems to be stretching the facts to consider this is a widely known difference.

Consumer law does allow people to have a 'cooling off' periods depending on how & where you purchase, so that man be suffice for a return or exchange if you are quick (7 days in UK, 14 in EU IIRC).

Clearly it's not a trivial decision, but neither are the solutions for 10.9 contacts & calendar syncing outside of the internet (yet). I still think reverting is the best course of action for anyone who isn't capable of running a server and for some people that means using a different Mac, returning a new model seems like a reasonable place to start.

No it didn't. It started long before that - when local syncing of Notes was removed in OS X Mountain Lion way back in July 2012. It has been updated since to include Contacts and Calendars.

So, the petition has actually had just 5200 signatures in 18 months. About 10 people per day.

That's really rubbish. Obviously not as many people care about it as you would like.

    Full Ack, Drew.

Problem with going back to Lion for me is - I just got to know the missing sync some days after updating. And it will be a horrible thing for me to go 4-5 days back with all the data and updates I made in between.

And what about the tools and software are going for Marvicks in between? Can I easily update to them when using Lion? Too much to read and look for.

I am really frustrated with all that - and I love my Mac till Maverick was coming out and advertised to me "Just install! Its free and just bring advantages!"

(btw I use Mac since my McIntosh Classic... and never was so terrible displeased by Apple)

UK 7 day cooling off period for Distance Selling (online sales) and doorstep selling (double glazing) does not apply to a retail store. If you go into a high street store you have no statutory cooling off period, though some retailers give up to 28 days. Very unusual with computers and phones though, unless seal is unbroken.

No, the fallacy is not thinking you can host your own local "cloud," thus obviating the use of an internet-based one.
