Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I'm trying to find the latest one. It's difficult. I think the point being made earlier was to do with the popularity of iCloud meaning that they were justified in dropping sync services and the 320 figure was taken to mean that 320,000,000 people can't be wrong so Apple must be right. That's my take on it anyway.

The point was laboured upon so often and so heavily that some people started to question the statistics of the figure and started to split hairs and note things about how lots of people have iCloud accounts but don't use them. Some have multiple accounts. etc etc.......

As I'm sure you can see these would reduce the users figure. I'm well aware that if it's 320M users it could also mean 400M accounts or even more but I'd suggest that the vast majority of companies tend to present things about themselves in a favourable light. Car manufacturers for example post mileage and performance figures that their users never achieve. Sure it may do 50 to the gallon but that's with minimal gas, no passengers or luggage, no wind - you see where I'm going?

It's easy to say X amount of users, X amount of unique users is different.

Nice attempt at a sidestep. Fail. Are you suddenly being nice and polite because you realise you have nothing but opinions and no facts?

Even if it were only 50 million, then that's still an enormous among more than those complaining about loss of local USB sync for contacts and calendars.

Speculation as to the number of actual users is rife, but it is simply speculation. The number of accounts is not.

99% of it looks like about 10 users from what I see.

Chris, I am having the same issue.  I cannot work with I cloud,  I wrote the respose tteam below, please read in its entirety:

No, Devon is obviously a very intelligent and knowledgeable individual.  He was able to address my concerned immediately and was able to troubleshoot the issue to the highest degree that the Mavericks operating system would allow him to.  It is my deepest suggestion that your board of directors should listen to the recorded audio file from my phone conversation with Devon as to not only hear what an excellent employee you have, you can possibly examine this specific issue in detail which unfortunately in my opinion is highly representative of the negative cultural environment Apple is directing itself towards. To not be able to sync my bookmarks from my Mac to my I Phone void of having to be tethered/connected to I cloud is simply reprehensible and has greatly decreased my systems (Macs) ability to meet my business requirements. Truly the inability to execute this standardized function violates Mr. Job's leadership ideology of, "works out of the box" as it is simplistic in the examination of this reality is that the removal of this function is not just an opinion of my own, yet rather is that Mac no longer truly just, “works out of the box”.   I have to say, as genuinely as I possibly can, it is unfortunate that for the first time in many years I am being forced to look for solutions from other vendors.  I sincerely hope your organization takes the time to explore the above issue further as I can’t help but believe this is not just a design issue specific to myself, it demonstrates a negative cultural shift by Apple towards its customers that reflects overconfidence as well as a violation of a founding principle that made Apple what it is today.  Any feedback by anyone in your organization they could give me that might lead to a resolution of the above technical difficulty, I would be very grateful.  Thank you for your time and professionalism.

I have no idea who you are replying to and as you have no question to answer I will leave you to yourself. Good luck with whatever you are seeking.

What is your moral, ethical or sociopolitical objection to syncing browser bookmarks on icloud?

First reaction when I discovered icloud bookmarks was "wow!"  same as all the other facilities it provides.

    > I cant sync my bookmarks unless I am connected to the cloud???

Correct, but as your bookmarks are useless unless connected to the Internet, that should not be an issue.

This is an Apple users forum, and just like you are, we are Apple users, not Apple employees.
