Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Most of Matt Scultz's comments have now been removed. That's unfortunate. It doesn't help in addressing this issue.

It must have broken the rules somehow. You should have received an email as to why.

You don't HAVE to reply to everything on this thread. You seem to be under some illusion that you must. I didn't see any of those posts addressed to you.

I didnt ask you Ziatron, but if you are also worried about people seeing what websites you have bookmarked, dont bookmark naughty websites.

I might see some specific countries or companies that might restrict where you can store data about people contractualy (although see my earlier post about Safe Harbor Scheme) but Bookmarks?? really??

To Meg St Clair and Ziatron: yes, I've written to http://www.apple.com/feedback. But they say they won't respond and I'm not expecting to hear from them. After all, Apple now employs large numbers of manual-following employees who have no power to do anything to address customers' problems.

they say they will not respond, but they thank you for your input.

When we vote for our politicians we dont expect a letter of thanks, but if enough of us vote for the same one, things change. Please dont discourage people from  "voting" on this issue.

I've just bought a high-end MacBook Pro Retina — without knowing about this problem. I've used Macs since 1989 and I am really suprised that a basic feature of way I interact with my computer and my phone has been taken away without my knowing anything about it.

I would not have bought the new computer if I had known about this. Instead I would have either continued using my old computer (with Mountain Lion) or bought an old (but more powerful machine) still running Mountain Lion.

That's exactly what happened to our company. Almost bait and switch IMHO.

Were you told that the feature was available on a new Mac, or did you just assume that it was.

I agree with you.  For thouse that are buying new.  ESP as a new computer can run into the thousands of dolers.

To get back on track (yes I can move on) The question of local sync is a problem for older hardware or where people have desided that for what ever resion they can't/don't want to use iCloud

I think we have almost all the answers to this problem.  For sync without iCloud or internet the choices are:

Run a local OSX server. Gives Contacs, Calinders and with some work Notes(I have to e-mail them to may self).

Run something like https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311 thanks for Pete for posting the link.

    Or ownCloud

There is a BIG something to watchout for. Some have seen this need and put the word "Local" into the service name E.G. https://helpdesk.egnyte.com/entries/61490-Desktop-Sync-Personal-Local-Cloud-Over view but when you install this you find you need an account with egnyte I stoped at that point becouse that is just iCloud by another name.

Use a version windows maybe on a pc or in VMware (I have not tested this)

I am just about to test a program called SyncMate but it asked if I wont to install "Windows Mobile 5.x, 6.x USB sync support" So I will google this first. I am using a Mac so I question this.

I hope this gives some good pointers

BookMarks are the thing I have not checked

There are three non-internet workarounds that I know *do* work. I know they are not right for everyone. But they do enable local syncing without internet access and using Mavericks. I don't know if they work with a 3G iPhone, mine's a 3GS. I'm posting them again for the sake of keeping them visible on the thread:

    (1) Barney-15E has created a User Tip (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311) which enables you to run a CalDAV and CardDAV server on your own computer (just the regular machine that you normally use) and to sync directly between your iPhone and your computer without putting you data on the internet. It uses wifi either on your own home network or on an ad hoc network you set up using 'Create Network…' from your computer's WiFi menu. It takes a bit of work to set up but once you've done it it operates very easily. It's not a perfect solution to the loss of USB sync but IME it works pretty well. There's another shorter thread whic is focused on implementing this solution:https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5549736?tstart=0

    or

    (2) get Mavericks Server, for a moderate outlay, and set up the same sort of thing that way. It may be easier to do. Don't be discouraged by a few posts on this thread which suggest Apple deprecate that idea. I'm fairly sure they flow from mutual misunderstanding between client and Apple Adviser.

    and

    (3) ownCloud now works with Mavericks and provides another way for you to set up your own server "internally": http://michaelgracie.com/2013/11/13/getting-ios-7-calendar-and-contacts-syncing- directly-with-os-x-10-9-mavericks/

And if you're hoping for change make sure you post on the Apple feedback pages. This forum is only user-to-user, moderated by Apple if a user draws their attention to it, but otherwise only read by them by chance.

    Hope this helps

    James

Please don't forget the oldest and best solution. Microsoft Exchange, does not require Internet access (other than for email) and will synchronize contacts, calendars and tasks etc over an internal network. It is a sync solution with 20+ years of development behind it.

    It's just not free.

Looks Very Nice BUT not yeat with Mavericks, Eltima Software say they are working on it.

While looking into this the error/message that comes up often has the word "disabled" so are the services there just disabled or are they removed? make of this what you will.
