Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    (1) Barney-15E has created a User Tip (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311) which enables you to run a CalDAV and CardDAV server on your own computer (just the regular machine that you normally use) and to sync directly between your iPhone and your computer without putting you data on the internet. . . . .

I've been trying to install this, but I've run into problems. Is there anywhere I can get advice? Thanks.

Try starting your own thread and asking advice. Your post will simply get lost in the repetitiveness of this ongoing saga here.

    Good luck

As I am trying to follow Barney-15E's instructions for Baikal Server, I really need to follow him (or Jérôme Schneider who created the programme). How can I reach him/them?

(Per SNR, please don’t respond to this message if you don’t know the answer. Thanks!)

OK you would be better off starting a new question/thread, But as you asked here I will try and help.  I have the instructions and can follow them.   To help you I/we need to know:

What devices do you want to sync?

Do you have a working network?

What have you done/How far have you got?

As for reaching Jerome Schneider, I am not shore it is so hard that the programmer is needed to solve any problems in setting his system up but if you relay need to find him. try using the "donate" button at the bottom of the website "http://baikal-server.com"  there will be an e-mail address there.

I think we have almost all the answers to this problem.  For sync without iCloud or internet the choices are:

    Run a local OSX server.

    Run something like {Biakal}

    Or ownCloud

    (1) [Biakal info]

    (2) [Mavericks Server]

    (3) [ownCloud]

You are both failing to see another option - don't use 10.9.

All OS X versions before 10.9 still sync to iOS over USB - that includes Contacts, Calendars, Notes, Bookmarks and Mail accounts in addition to the regular iTunes media (music, apps, podcasts, video, TV, photos).

It seems irrational to me that you are willing to choose to use an OS that doesn't do what you need, so jump through many hoops to make a solution that doesn't work as well as it did in every version before 10.9… lemmings spring to mind.

Has anyone released an app for 10.9 that you simply can't live without so you must use 10.9?

If not why do you feel compelled to add to Apple's figure for 'total users who upgraded to 10.9'. Apple will be using you within the examples of the many 'happy users' next time Tim Cook does an announcement about how smooth the 10.9 transition was.

Eventually Apple or a third party will have a realistic solution to this problem (via USB), do you really want to spend your time installing every possible way to sync data via a local network so you can evaluate which one works best for you?

How about in a few months time when Eltima release SyncMate (or another solution pops up), more time to install, move data, test…

Isn't it a better idea to revert to your last OS and get on with using one button with a cable to sync.

    • No server needed
    • No networking needed
    • No third party updates to manage

Just continue as you were before Apple convinced you 10.9 was needed. 10.9 will still be waiting for you after third parties fix this mess & other users have time to beta test the fix.

"You are both failing to see another option - don't use 10.9."

NO I see that option but it's not an answer to the question that this thread is about  "How ti local sync iPhone with Mavericks? iCloud is not an option"

You are right if the question was "How to sync iPhone? iCoud is no an option"

As for the irrationality of choosing an OS that doesn't do what you need...........  Sometimes you don't have a choice (The first laptop I had was given to me by the company I worked, I had to use it for work and had to use the OS that was on it but I could use it for personal stuff too)

There are three non-internet workarounds that I know *do* work. I know they are not right for everyone. But they do enable local syncing without internet access and using Mavericks. I don't know if they work with a 3G iPhone, mine's a 3GS. I'm posting them again for the sake of keeping them visible on the thread:

    (1) Barney-15E has created a User Tip (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311) which enables you to run a CalDAV and CardDAV server on your own computer (just the regular machine that you normally use) and to sync directly between your iPhone and your computer without putting you data on the internet. It uses wifi either on your own home network or on an ad hoc network you set up using 'Create Network…' from your computer's WiFi menu. It takes a bit of work to set up but once you've done it it operates very easily. It's not a perfect solution to the loss of USB sync but IME it works pretty well. There's another shorter thread whic is focused on implementing this solution:https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5549736?tstart=0

    or

    (2) get Mavericks Server, for a moderate outlay, and set up the same sort of thing that way. It may be easier to do. Don't be discouraged by a few posts on this thread which suggest Apple deprecate that idea. I'm fairly sure they flow from mutual misunderstanding between client and Apple Adviser.

    and

    (3) ownCloud now works with Mavericks and provides another way for you to set up your own server "internally": http://michaelgracie.com/2013/11/13/getting-ios-7-calendar-and-contacts-syncing- directly-with-os-x-10-9-mavericks/

And if you're hoping for change make sure you post on the Apple feedback pages. This forum is only user-to-user, moderated by Apple if a user draws their attention to it, but otherwise only read by them by chance.

    Hope this helps

    James

    Hi James,

Wondering if you could post a link to the instructions for method 2? Thanks

This is a user-to-user technical support forum. Apple doesn't participate. It seems unlikely that they've got people reading this busy a forum but who knows. If you want them to know how you feel, use the Feedback page:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback

How do we file our feedback as being against Mac OS X Mavericks? For Apple products, they show the hardware products, and then system apps for iOS and OS X, but not the operating system products themselves. Seems irrelevant to file my feedback on MacBook Pro when it is Mavericks I want to provide feedback on - I don't have any comments on my machine itself.
