Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    Hi James,

Wondering if you could post a link to the instructions for method 2? Thanks

Go to the Mac App store and get Mac OS X Server.

Yes, very helpful to state the obvious first step and then to stop right there.

If you scroll down the page you will find OS X under software.

Select Mac OS X under OS X apps then select Mavericks in the drop down.

If it was obvious, why did you ask?

    Chris CA,

tkoyn was asking James Richards for advice on the actual process, yet you glibly stomp over the question & post no help beyond step 1 or don't you actually know what they are?

tkoyn there have been several links posted to 10.9 server setup instructions in this thread, these are some I can recall from memory…

    http://www.macworld.com/article/2061183/itunes-ios-syncing-gone-solve-it-with-se rver-.html

    http://krypted.com/mac-os-x-server/configure-the-calendar-service-in-mavericks-s erver/

Krypted also covers other parts of server…

    http://krypted.com/guides/mavericks-server/

and more general server info http://www.afp548.com/

Or hit the Apple manual from the help menu when you have 10.9 server installed.

Help for this topic is all over the web, check out a few search results to get a good overview from different perspectives.

Rolling back to Mountain Lion is a good option, but not an option for everyone, though it's OK for some, and, of course, syncing with OS X Mountain Lion is not syncing with OS X Mavericks which is what the thread is asking for.

I've not tried all the options. Paying for Mavericks Server was a struggle for me, and when I was setting up ownCloud still had some issues. Baïkal has been running smoothly for me for three months so far with only one minor glitch, and no loss of data. It is as easy and semaless in operation as USB syncing was under the previous OS.

    James,

FYIW, I rolled back to Mountain Lion about a week after I intalled Mavericks.  I did not see the subtle very fine very well hidden proclaimation that iOS-OSX syncing no longer worked as it did before over USB cables.  The method and minor problems I found (back in October, 2013) can be found here:

I have not succeeded in installing Baikal Server, nor have I been able to reach either Jerome Schneider, who wrote Baikal (thanks to Top Steve for pointing me to his email) or Barney-15E who created the notes (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311).

It’s not practical for me to post my whole Terminal transcript. Basically I could follow Barney-15E to the end of the ‘Create Self-signed SSL Certificates’ section to the point where he suggested:

“you can delete the files created in your home folder (server.crt, server.key, server.key.org, server.csr)”.

I lost him there. I couldn’t find these files. When I used the command:

    apachectl configtest

I got warnings and a syntax error instead of the necessary ‘Syntax OK’. (Note to Barney if he sees this one day: it might help to number the sections so it’s easier to refer to them.)

Anyone trying this method should be aware that the file structure is entirely hidden. It has to be uncovered via ‘Go to folder’ in the Go menu of the Finder. Also there is (apparently) no such thing as a ‘home folder’. (No doubt a lot of people will know what this means. I didn’t.)

One option would be to undo all the changes I’ve made — is this necessary? — and use OS X Server, however I’m not sure this will be much easier. It seems that scaling it down just to be a Contacts/Calendar server entails quite a lot of work.

Another (temporary) option for me would be to remove my 4,500-entry Contacts file and start again with a new file — basically just of currently used phone numbers — synchronised over iCloud. If there is a viable solution to this in the future, I can then merge the files at a later stage. Otherwise it might be better to find a completely different application to hold the information I've been putting (over a number of years) in the Addressbook/Contacts. (Fortunately, Calendar is not a problem for me.)

It would make sense to create your own thread.

Use the new thread to post the error messages that apachectl spits out. It may be possible to fix it by running a few more commands & checking config files.

The 'home folder' is also known as ~/ (use that in the Go menu or in Terminal) it is the folder that contains all your stuff (Desktop, Documents, Pictures etc). Terminal opens inside your home folder by default.

I don't think moving to another contacts app would help, you still need a way to sync to iOS and on 10.9 that means a server. Outlook may be the closest, but I think that relies on the same sync services that Apple removed.

OS X server should be easier than Baikal, you are not stripping stuff away, but enabling what services you need. It still takes work to setup & you'll need to take care around updates - don't do them when you have important work

Personally I think it's overkill to run a server on a Mac that isn't static, Apple's own support claimed it was a bad idea ('but what do they know' seems to be the consensus around here). Contacts & Calendars are lightweight services so you should be fine running on your Mac, but you are in the realm of 'we don't support that'.

See the earlier posts for how to's on server setup. It's fairly simply, but not trivial.

You are both failing to see another option - don't use 10.9.

Now that we are living in the world of downloaded software, what's involved in purchasing 10.7 or 10.8 ?

Of course, versions 10.6 and earlier are easy to get because they were sold on disk and are readily available in the used market.

Imp68, you need to point out that you need to have a previous version already installed. This will not downgrade from mavericks as described.

I am interested in several posters who claim that "with the help of Apple I was able to downgrade without the use of Time Machine" . I cant find any method to do that (not that I want to)
