Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Remember, you get what you pay for.

    And Mavericks was free.

It is so annoying that it was Apple who reduced Macintosh user's options while maintaining full iTunes local sync functionality in Windows. After decades of enduring market marginalization, it's tough to swallow when it's Apple doing the marginalization of their own system.

Small correction: Apple SOLD it for free.

They set up the price and don't care if it was $0 or $100  but did not deliver what they sold, thre was nothing mentioned in Relases Notes that with upgrading the software (which you CANNOT downgrade) they take out some functionality I think they should be sued for it!.

You can launch an action against them if you feel this way, why wait in hope that someone else will do it for you?

    What cannot be downgraded?

If you installed 10.9 on a system that ran an earlier OS you can remove 10.9 & reinstall the previous OS.

It's a difficult & time consuming process, but that doesn't make it impossible. Only iOS prevents you from reverting.

Didn't you read the disclaimer on Mavericks before you downloaded it?

If you have Time Machine running, it's about 3 mouse click and let it run.

Maybe not, but it is there for a legal reason. It is covering their product. Talk of law suits here make me laugh. Where did the term 'you should have read the fine print' come from? It was there to read, you all hit Agree and now some fools talk law suits? Now I can't stop laughing!

    Good luck with that.

    I've started a new discussion:

How to use OS X Server (Mavericks) to synch Contacts and Calendar between a Mac and an iPhone/iPad

    at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5924343

I hope this will help those of us who are trying to use OS X Server to solve the issue discussed here.

Tonight I was sitting in front of the TV surfing on the Ipad and came upon a website that I was interested in adding to my bookmarks.  Due to the fact that within the last month I purchased a Mac book pro with Maverick pre-installed on it, I have found out like many of you, that I can no longer sync my bookmarks in lieu of being connected to, “I cloud”. For reasons of occupational IT protocol, I cannot be tethered to the collective. So in still having the want/need to sync this particular bookmark, I set my Ipad down on the table, walked into the other room, fired up my new Mac Pro with Maverick, searched out the site on my lap top, duplicated the new folder, saved the link as I had viewed on my Ipad, closed the browser, and then shut the system back down, and then walked back into the other room and picked up my Ipad again.  This unfortunately is my reality.  The whole time I am doing this, I couldn’t help but ask myself, why? I feel that no longer does my Apple system, “works right out of the box”.  For myself, it has gotten to the point where I see Apple’s little, “update reminders” in the upper right hand corner of my screen, I keep hitting “remind me tomorrow” as I am apprehensive on what functionality they will take away next that is hidden in some 500 page legal document. At a quarter of a million views on this particular subject alone, would you not think that this is something that a good company that actually cared about their customers would prioritize and address?  The removal of this basic and common functionality has for the first time in many years forced me to question what else is out there in regards to a computer that still just works rather that being forced into the cloud for it to function. This maneuver is an example of the worst way Apple could have gone and in my humble opinion is highly representative of the direction towards their customers they will continue to take. Have a good day and good luck to all of you.

No it isnt a good post.

I asked you but you have not explained why syncing bookmarks to icloud is against your occupational IT protocol when icloud is 128bit encrypted and bookmarks contain only public information.

By the way, syncing with USB would still involve walking to the next room, firing up the other Mac, then taking even longer to sync. Icloud happens in the background whilst you look for your next interesting webpage.

You are at no real additional inconvenience. Your argument is based solely on your occupational protocol. Which organization has banned you from syncing bookmarks? Why cannot you just tick Safari and not the other icloud items?

    Here's a couple of suggestions…

Use Google Chrome for browsing, you can see tabs on all other devices & sync bookmarks if you sign in with a Google account (other browsers do it too - some have their own service). This shouldn't be an issue for privacy since you are probably not syncing contact data (you weren't explicit in why the IT policy stops you so I may be wrong). Instapaper can also be a reasonable 'link transfer' fallback too, but it's not an excuse for Apples missing features.

Turn of automatic update checking in system prefs if you don't want to be nagged everyday. It is wise to install security updates though.
