The infamous "they" already know your browsing habits by virtue of the fact that
you are using the internet!!!!!
"They" do not need your bookmarks!!!!!
Every site you visit leaves a trail of bread crumbs that lead right back to
your front door,

Feb 23, 2014 4:10 AM in response to woodmeister50by gumsie,Not really. Yule stated 'habits'. Does that not mean the things Yule tends to look at ? If therefore you have most internet goodies turned off when not required, (Cookies/flash/Java/Javascript), which I do - don't use social media either.
It's not easy to determine habits then is it?
Sure they have my IP but they can't target me with ads which is what they need to learn habits for.

Feb 23, 2014 4:17 AM in response to imac_user_since_AppleII_in1982by peter_watt,Probably Maiden North Carolina. It is safer there than on your hard drive if your router is compromised, which is the newest criminal method of hacking your data.

Feb 23, 2014 4:39 AM in response to imac_user_since_AppleII_in1982by applejpmc,I completely agree with imac_user_since_AppleII_in1982 - I've used just about every Apple made since 1991 and feel massively DECEIVED by apple. Frankly there is no other word for it.
I know about 'terms and conditions' and how one should read them, but who is going to read countless pages of legal stuff that most people outside the legal profession cannot understand anyway.
I read the comments about security updates (necessary? or now to be viewed as another way for apple to adjust what we have on our computers to suit apple and not us at all?) and how one can never be 100% secure as we all use the internet.
But pre-Mavericks it was possible to keep contacts, notes and calendar private with local sync - it still is but is simply so complicated you really need a programming degree to achieve it - Baikal may suit someone with programming skills but its total gobbledegook to me, Apple OS X Server is buggy in the extreme, not easy to set up, unreliable, duplicates stuff several hundred times in some instances for no reason. Mavericks has (as I use it more) taken away countless useful things - iMovie no longer exports to quicktime (or other formats) only to social media which I for one have little interest in.
Until a developer comes up with a real local USB sync option in reality there is only one solution - go back to pre-Mavericks and avoid pretty much every update form Apple.
The purists will scoff and waffle on about this and that, but the fact is I can still pick up a 10 year old apple laptop and, while it is a bit slow, it works, connects to internet when I want it, does email, and basic business stuff. So to merely go back to Lion is not a big deal, except the hassle involved in doing it without losing a lot of data - migration apple programmes are crap in that they lose stuff every time, or corrupt them. So the only reliable way is to do it bit by bit.
When I come to replacing the current apple computers I have Apple will not be high on the list for replacements and I will no longer be recommending apple products of any type to anyone.

Nothing is 100% secure.

Feb 23, 2014 5:49 AM in response to Csound1by imac_user_since_AppleII_in1982,Yes it so, Ms is much less reliable, but in the past I could decide what to use.
Now I have to decide between a "a_lot_of_crash_und_unrealabe_system" and other one, that is safer but no more credible.
Apple for me was not only a computer producer, it was "different", projected to incessant technical improvements and loyal to the customer and to a certain philosophy.
More over, I can back up my whole system with time machine, but no more contacts and calendar.
Where is the congruence of that?
If Apple will go in bankruptcy in the future, I really hope not, (does anybody remember names as Tandy Corporation, Commodore, Olivetti, Altair, Sinclaire and so son..? ), what will be of your contacts and appointments?
And after the bankruptcy, how much time the liquidator will "freeze" the server in order to make the inventory before selling the whole system to the new owner?
In the meanwhile, if you have problem with your iPhone how will you do without your datas?
Who will be the new owner of the servers and of all the datas stored in them?
And if it would be a China or a russian company ?
No fear of that?
We are in the open world market, are you 100% sure it won't be like that?
I wander why FBI, Army, Air Force, etc, which use Apple Iphones, are not sensible to the telephone numbers they have in their phones and are backuped up via iCloud ... ?

DesktopsI find your conclusions hilariously random.
Go and use some other service, one that avoids the internet, mobile phones and messaging systems. Then you will be reasonably safe, and stay home, no one can watch what you are doing there, probably.

Feb 23, 2014 6:41 AM in response to Csound1by imac_user_since_AppleII_in1982,I have experienced of management of company bankruptcy and I know how it goes in these field.
That's why I'm skeptical of the cloud storage ( for any cloud data storage)
If I back up my datas on Time Machines I know there is the life casuality that may cause loss of my datas, but my datas lay under my responsibility.

You really do talk some rubbish. What's this? http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14734
The number of times you've made totally incorrect assumptions about various Mac/iPhone capabilities in this thread which are totally untrue is unbelievable.
Please, spend some time and actually learn how to use the products you own.

DesktopsThat's what I said, were you not paying attention?
Don't use the internet, mobile telephones, landline telephone, pagers, gps navigational aids, credit cards or the mail.
That way you will be fairly safe from miscreants obtaining your stuff.

Erm, they'll still be in the regular backups you make of your important data. Surely, you do backup don't you? And they'll still be on your computer and iOS device.

That's actually a very good point. Can't get back to where you were without a net connection.
If Apple will go in bankruptcy in the future, I really hope not, (does anybody remember names as Tandy Corporation, Commodore, Olivetti, Altair, Sinclaire and so son..? ), what will be of your contacts and appointments
I think the chances of Apple going bankrupt in the foreseeable future are about zero. But I take your point.

Trouble is, any large organisation will have a system in place to back up to their own networked volumes. I suspect that their employees should be using their internal systems and not iCloud.

Feb 23, 2014 7:09 AM in response to gumsieby TopSteve,Sorry this will be off topic: I know I'm not the best person to talk about spelling. Who started putting a "s" on the end of "Data"? Are not both the plural and singular forms "Data".

Feb 23, 2014 8:00 AM in response to snozdopby applejpmc,Go and try to find Quicktime in the Share menu in iMovie 9...... Easy to find multiple options.
Go and try to find Quicktime in the Share menu in Mavericks version............ lots of cloud social media options, not a lot else and even if it were possible through the incredibly lengthy way suggested on your link - it is still a step backwards in simplicity - which is why I chose Apple back in 1991.
