Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

To test drive iCloud just set up a new user account, it won't have data in it that can get misplaced.

When I do that, I get the message, I put in my last post:

“when you click OK all the data on your computer will be moved to the iCloud so it can be avable to all of your devices.”

I don't want my data "MOVED"  would would may be ok is a "COPY" but it would be best if I coude deside what I want to happen to my data once I have the iCloud account and had a look round.

. . . .  I assume that I could get my data back with out iCloud if I had run Time Machine before joining iCloud?

How does this work? I have backed up with Time Machine, lost my Calendars (to whereever), and tried to restore them but I couldn't work out how to access the right files on Time Machine. (The latter seems to be another part of the system that has been affected by 'cloudification' or whatever you want to call it.)

I am now using a USB stick to back up my Contacts and Calendars.

    I have not tested this.

Open your home folder in the finder. If you don't see "Library"  right click on a blank part of the finder window and click "show view options" then tick the box next to "Show Library Folder" and the Library folder should appear.

Rember/Note we are talking about the "/Users/username/Library" folder and not the system one.

Open you Library folder you will see "Calendars" now Enter Time Machine   I have the Time Machine icon on my menu bar so I just go there and click the menu "Enter Time Machine".  On my machine it is very slow so be pas...

Onec it's loded navagate to the "/Users/username/Library" and on the right hand side use the slider to go back to when you had your calendar info or befor you setup iCloud.  Highlight "Calendars" and click restore.

    Job Done

As I have sead I have not tested this.  If some one has tested this perhaps thay can conf....

Test before advising would be helpful.

When you create a test account on the Mac you should also set up a test Apple-ID to allocate to it. If you used your own Apple ID on the test account then yes your own data is still likely to be moved to icloud! That is under your control.

I misinterpreted your question. We have an iCloud account on these machines, we can't find a way not to.

Don't enter an Apple ID and password, it's very simple to not have an account (it actually requires less effort than having one)

I really don't understand why you don't just omit supplying the login credentials.

    Hi James

Just wanted to describe how I've been getting on with OSX server and ask a couple of questions.

    1)     cannot get calendar part of it to work at all

    2)     contacts sort of sync but there are several specific problems I am finding:

         a)     OSX server has created 2 address books in my contacts - 1 is the original address book called 'All on my                Mac', 2 is called 'Server'

         b)     If I export a contacts archive - it doesn't seem to matter what I do it is always from the 'All on my Mac' and                not what is on the 'Server'

         c)      It doesn't seem to matter which of the 2 address books I select to add a new contact to - it only updates or                adds to the 'Server', never to the 'All on my Mac'.  I've actually got to the point of having to go back                through my contacts - 1400 + and have to, one by one, make a v-card of each new or changed contact                and keep in a desktop file so I can update properly at some later stage. I cannot find any way (that is in                any way reliable) of doing a 'sync'.

          d)     Unfortunately any 'sync' or update from the 'Server' version happens so slowly that it is impossible                to know when it has updated or synced and the result is that whatever you archive is never up to date.

         e)     Whenever I switch between 'All on my Mac' or 'Server' the spinning top appears and I cannot use my mac                for anything for ages till it stops. Seems to use up all the computing power - even if I have no other                programmes running - just for the contacts! And I have plenty of spare unused GBs on my mac.

    3)     Seems I am doing something wrong or this plainly does not work. Have you any ideas on the above problems?

I'm assuming I will have to go through all my contacts and v-card everything to an external HD, delete OSX Server off my system and then reimport OSX Server and start again.

This is a massive pain in the arse frankly, isn't it. And having to scroll through so many people on this thread extolling the virtues of iCloud is just ridiculous. Thanks for your useful input.

To clear things up.  When you install OSX server it's like haveing two computers(you can think of this as the server being like a virtual machine).  In the address book this shows up in the way you put in your post.  "All on my Mac" is the Local computer and "Server" is the data on the other/server.

To get over the fact that you end up with duplicates and in a big address book this can be a pain but there are some ways to work with this.

My way was to highlight the cards with the same info from my diffent accounts (in may case 4 diffent accounts) and click on "Card"->"Merge or Link Selected Cards"  for each address that was a duplicate.

An other option is to only use one account.  Highlight the "All on my Mac"  and drag them to "Server" then check that all the address are in "server" and delete the cards from "All on my Mac" then use the "Server" as the default account.

    I have tested both

I'm a bit confused.  I clicked on the link that you included in your post and found this:

    "

These instructions apply only if you use OS X v.10.8.5 or earlier. If you use OS X Mavericks v.10.9 or later, your contacts, calendars, and other info are updated on your computers and iOS devices via iCloud. For more information, see iCloud Help at icloud.com.

This seems to say clearly that Apple is NOT giving you a choice if you have Mavericks.

If you use Mavericks you can not sync via a USB cable via iTunes anymore. But you can use any other method you want to.
