Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

We once turn over from Motorola and Nokia, why can't we do it now on Apple? i-phone come into my life only 5 years ago, does it means I must stick with it with my life forever even it had become a less competitive product? Android allow us to sync either locally with USB and at the same time choose to use Google, but Apple only gives us one option - Could server. Using Android doesn't means MUST use Google to sync data. The point is not on Google, the point is why should we place our personal data on third party server either i-Cloud, Google, etc. I've been Apple user for years with multiple i-device on hand. I once bought a Samsung phone and does not last for a week because it so inconveneicne to sync data with my Macbook. i-Phone is still a good product but just so frustrated and see Apple removing sync calendar and contact function from iTune. I start asking myself, is there any other phone that can allow me sync my personal data locally, the answer is yes and unfortunately, is not Apple. At least till now I still can't find the answer from Apple site ....

Please try to keep your facts straight, iPhones do not mean that you must use iCloud. (or even Could server)

I would be interested which phone will sync to your macbook using USB, apart from Z10 with Blackberry link and that is a joke.

Using iCloud will work on Android if you really want to experiment with shoddy phones. If you are away from internet (quite rare these days) stick to your phone for your schedule til you do get to a wifi spot. As a businessman you will appreciate not wasting expensive time swapping cables.

Great!! I can skip using iCloud. Please share if that is the case, what is the solution to sync my data, contact and calendar without using iCloud. I been trying to search through the website. Is there some setting on iTunes? ... Many thanks for your advise.

Can you really not be bothered to look for yourself?

    Microsoft Exchange

    Zimbra

    Google

    Yahoo

There's 4 to be getting on with, use Google to find the rest.

While you are looking please tell us which Android phone you will use for 'local' sync.

Many Thanks! Samsung phone can sync locally with Mac via Kies, but again, it is not as friendly user as previously using i-phone with iTunes. Wishing you to have a wonderful day and thanks for the advise. Peace ....

Kies is a data transfer program, it will not sync Contacts, Calendars etc. Please check your facts.

That page says the same thing as I did

It's a file transfer app, not a contact or calendar sync app, (unless you use Outlook for Windows), do you?

Please link to the page that explains how to sync Contacts and Calendars on a Mac using Kies.

Hi, yes, it did and I'm using Mac Pro. My sister is using it. As menioned, it work on Android phone with Mac Book but the sync is not as easy as using iTunes sync contact with iphone. Previously, everything can easily work via iTunes and it is so perfect!!

I am a mere user and don't intend to push any brand. Forget about Android, Kies or anything where they are not perfect product as well. Just trying and still trying to find the solution how can I sync contact and calendar locally using iphone, preferrably like last time using iTunes. It is so perfect and why remove this function from iTunes?

You can't sync your iPhone locally using Mavericks.

As Csound1 has indicated above there are other cloud-based solutions apart from iCloud™. If you don't want to use anything cloud-based, however, there are three non-internet workarounds that I know *do* work. I know they are not right for everyone. They enable you to set up a simple server on the same computer that you regularly use (no separate machine is required) and they do enable local syncing using Mavericks, and without internet access. I'm posting them again for the sake of keeping them visible on the thread:

    (1) Barney-15E has created a User Tip (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311) which enables you to run a CalDAV and CardDAV server on your own computer (just the regular machine that you normally use) and to sync directly between your iPhone and your computer without putting your data on the internet. It uses wifi either on your own home network or on an ad hoc network you set up using 'Create Network…' from your computer's WiFi menu. It takes a bit of work to set up but once you've done it it operates very easily. It's not a perfect solution to the loss of USB sync but IME it works pretty well. There's another shorter thread which is focused on implementing this solution:https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5549736?tstart=0

    or

    (2) get Mavericks Server, for a moderate outlay, and set up the same sort of thing that way. It may be easier to do. Don't be discouraged by a few posts on this thread which suggest Apple deprecate that idea. I'm fairly sure they flow from mutual misunderstanding between client and Apple Adviser. Here is a Krypted post about how to set up Contacts and here's a more wide-ranging arstechnica guide to OS X Mavericks Server.

    and

    (3) ownCloud now works with Mavericks and provides another way for you to set up your own server "internally": http://michaelgracie.com/2013/11/13/getting-ios-7-calendar-and-contacts-syncing- directly-with-os-x-10-9-mavericks/

With any of these workarounds you need to change from storing your data in the location called "On my Mac" to the new location you create when you set up your server. I have previously posted about this transfer process on this thread as follows:

"Once I had my Baïkal server set up, I had to transfer my calendars from "On my Mac" to whatever my Baïkal account is called ("My local Calendars" in my case).

In order to do this I had to go through the following steps for each Calendar (for safety's sake I suggest you first click the File menu and choose 'Export' 'Calendar Archive…' and save a complete set of your calendar data), then:

    1. Select the calendar you want to transfer
    2. Choose 'Export' from the File menu, and choose the 'Export…' option.
    3. Save your calendar to a convenient location
    4. From the File menu choose 'New Calendar and select the name of your Baïkal account to create the calendar onto your Baïkal account, and give your calendar a name 9it can be the same as the name of your 'On my Mac' calendar.
    5. Choose 'Import' from the File menu, choose the 'Import…' option and select the calendar file you have just exported. Click the 'Import' button
    6. A dialog pops up saying 'Adding a new event. This calendar contains a new event. Please select a destination calendar' and there is a drop down menu with your default calendar showing.
    7. From the drop down menu choose the Baïkal calendar which you have just created and which you want to import your data into and click 'OK'.

Once you have done this you should have a duplicate sets of calendars in your 'On my Mac' and Baïkal accounts. In theory you can simply delete the 'On my Mac' calendars. Alternatively you can simply deactivate them, until you are happy that all your data has transferred, and then delete them at a later date. You will also have a further duplicate of this information in the .ics files you have exported onto your computer (these can safely be deleted.

Finally to make sure you get your older events onto your iPhone, tap 'Settings' on your phone's home screen and then tap 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' and scroll down until you come to the heading 'Calendars'. Select the 'Sync' item and choose how far back you want your Sync to go (2 weeks, 1 month - default, 3 months, 6 months or All Events)."

At some point in the near future, now I've successfully switched over, I'm going to make full backups of Calendar and of Contacts and then see what happens when I delete the old "On my Mac" and "iPhone" contacts, and rely completely on those held on the server.

Finally, if you're hoping for change from Apple make sure you post on the feedback pages. This forum is only user-to-user, moderated by Apple if a user draws their attention to it, but otherwise only read by them by chance.

    Hope this helps

    James

    Hi James

Please note that MS Exchange can be locally or cloud based, that is up to the user. So there are 4 workarounds (and Exchange is excellent, but expensive)
