Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Thanks Csound1. I'd overlooked MS Exchange as I know little about it and price would be an issue for me.

I'm using Baïkal, gumsie. It took some care and I had to restore my Apache setup to original settings once and start again, but I got there in the end. I documented the process a bit in the other thread I linked to above. Since then it's run seamlessly with only one minor glitch - just as easy as USB syncing was.

Thanks for that. I'm looking closely at Server.

Unfortunately it usually is, but it may be worth it if reliability is important

    Here's something we're investigating, it's $30, might be a solution for you:

    All,

I installed OS X server. But I have a problem ... if the server is down or unavailable (as it would be when I'm not next to the server since I only set up local access), if I update a contact on the iPhone it's not able to update the server, and the change is lost. I had expected that when the server comes up the iPhone would (somehow?) remember to keep trying to update, and would update the server when it comes back up. But this is not the case. There is no way that I can find to initiate a sync (as you would on iTunes), to sync up the latest changes.

I'm leery of setting up global access (even with VPN), and in any case, even in that case the server could go down.

Did anyone else run into this?

I've also been encountering some strange problems with OS X Server.

At first it worked fine synching Contacts and then, after a lot of trial and error I got the calendars synching.

Then yesterday, when I clicked the Server dock icon, it took me to the App Store instead of starting Server. I tried again several times and was eventually able to start Server, but this behaviour continued each time I attempted a synch.

This evening, another copy of Server (the same point update) started to download in the background. I stopped and deleted it, but then I couldn't find my original copy of Server. It had apparently been deleted. I then downloaded a new copy (still of the same point update) but I found all my settings were gone. Apparently I will have to set them up all over again.

Has anyone else encountered anything like this? Is there any way to avoid this happening?

Hi Peter, this is really for everybody but I thought you would be interested as one of the most prolific posters.

Below is an extract from an email I received from an IT training company but the study referred to is from Dell. Food for thought re cloud computing.

A new study by Dell revealed that the majority of IT leaders still don't take the threats of BYOD (bring your own device) or cloud computing as top security concerns. Even thoughsecurity breaches cost companies over £15 billion a year.

More employees are working on their personal devices, and storing company data in the cloud. This has led to 50% of businesses already experiencing data breaches, as a result of BYOD. Don't let your company add to these stats.

    Chris.

Haha! Oh good lord!! No, not interested at all in what Dell said. Any word from Blackberry??

    Thanks for the laugh

All - I am with everyone and HATE HATE HATE Apple force feeding the cloud and no way to do the most basic synching. Killing me.

I was watching this thread but there are so many emails I need to just read the thread and turn off the emails.

    1) Turned off "Receive email notificaitons" for this specific subject.

    2) Turned off EVERY notificaiton option in my Apple forum profile.

Problem - emails won't stop. Any ideas on what i'm missing on how to keep all these messages from flooding the inbox?

So folks, I just read about this: http://www.slapapp.com/syncmate-5-beta-with-os-x-mavericks-support-is-available- 2/

"The most important thing about the new version is that from now on users can sync their Contacts and Calendars without third party apps and cloud storages. SyncMate team developed the unique Sync Service that allows to sync devices locally and securely."

Haven't tried it yet as I am not home but it sounds promising, anyone willing to give it a shot and investigate further?

You go first. I don't use beta Third Party Apps. Tell us how it goes.

    Thanks

Tried SyncMate 5 beta, it's works perfect!

There is small issue with sync Calendars, - It didn't delete an event on iPhone during the sync when it was deleted on the Mac, but no any other problems so far

(also it was not able to mount iPhone as disk, as an option, but it's first beta, sure it will be fixed in near future.)

Contacts sync works like a charm, no any issue, life is getting better!

P.S. You have ability to choose which way to sync:  Mac <--> iDevice, Mac --> iDevice, iDevice --> Mac

So it isn't a 2 way sync, and it doesn't work every time - sounds promising.

It's do 2 way sync (default option).

Now product in beta stage, small bugs still should be fixed, agreed. But product even now looks very good and stable, imho.
