No problems found so far!!!
Other than the inability to sync if the applications are open. Let us know if anything else shows up.

Mar 5, 2014 4:53 AM in response to Csound1by James Richards,Given that SyncMate is obviously an application, I had read this statement as meaning that you didn't need to load third-party apps onto your mobile devices.

Mar 5, 2014 5:08 AM in response to James Richardsby Csound1,You only have to install 3rd party apps (syncmate) on your Mac, that is correct.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?
iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.
Well after two weeks of expermting with OS X Server we now have SyncMate http://mac.eltima.com/sync-mac.html As I now have in my last blog post http://www.tompkins-macqueen.com/Site/TechnoBlog/TechnoBlog.html
It may be in Beta(that might change in time) it may also be a 3rd party app but you only have to install it on one computer and it is not cloud bast. Some understand 3rd party to mean some other service/cloud provider like dropbox/google/yahoo it's not that It dose do what the Apple combo of "SyncServices" and iTunes used to.

Mar 5, 2014 5:52 AM in response to TopSteveby Csound1,3rd party (in this context) means not made by Apple, nothing more.
And if (after testing) SyncMate turns out to be the answer that will be a good thing. But we are not there yet.

Someone mentioned a while back they they are getting bombarded with lots of separate emails each time someone posts. That's happening with me. As much as I am entertained by the back and forth between you, Petermack and Csound,
LOL.
.............do you know if there is a way to keep up to date on possible solutions to the original question, in digest form? thanks.
This is what I do to reduce the email 'noise'. Works well too.
Use my ISP spam filter to delete without moving to a junk mailbox those mails that contain certain keywords. Those keywords are the usernames of those few arrogant hypocrites that keep on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on using phrases like, Stay on topic, Don't repeat yourself, the TOU you agreed to.....those same ones that have had posts removed themselves but pretend they're perfect etc etc.
As there is a lot activity here you'll actually still get lots of useful updates. One, or both will chime in, in a few seconds.

Mar 5, 2014 8:02 AM in response to gumsieby Csound1,I will make sure that you are correct then. (not in a few seconds but 38 minutes) I hope that's OK.
Stay on topic
Don't repeat yourself
And the TOU stuff.
OK

Mar 5, 2014 11:09 AM in response to TopSteveby gumsie,I've only tried one sync so far. Apart from it being Beta it seems quite polished. I made NO changes but I'm a tad perplexed about what I saw in the Sync log.
It said 2 changes were made?? I'll get in touch with Eltima and see what gives.
Also I went to the Calendar tab and it synced both Calendar and Contacts. My mistake probably but didn't expect both to happen as I'd only chosen one.

I believe as long as it has a tab open it will sync. By default it had SMS and Contacts open for me, I ignored SMS and focussed on contacts but when I hit sync I still got an error for the SMS stuff. Because the tab was there it tried to sync. After I removed the SMS tab and left only contacts the sync went smooth, I tried this with contacts and calendars both on, off and a mix of both, works good now.

Thank goodness a third party developer has come up with something. Hopefully we will now see the complaints drop a bit in this thread..............until some people start complaining about having to pay for it. But that is the nature of a third party app of this kind. To fill a void left by removal of an old feature and make money off it.
Thanks Eltima!!

Mar 5, 2014 2:20 PM in response to petermac87by jayv.,From what I read on their site the free version should always be able to do Contacts and Calendars so let's hope they stick with that once version 5 comes out of beta. realizing this is a prime feature now in high demand they might charge for contacts and/or calendar syncing like you said but fingers crossed!
At $39.95 (going off of current pricing, if this will have to be paid for V5...) I'd prefer to stick with OS X server. 20 bucks for a lot more features but I guess it'll come down to personal preference, available hardware and willingness to set it all up. Some may prefer to spend twice as much just to keey the USB sync alive.
I have monitored the software and have only found it makes one connection to their server and that's when it is activated. Checks for new versions can be disabled if a user wants and that will prevent it from calling home at all (though staying up to date is probably a better idea). No indication that contents are being synced or shared with them in any way so that's a privacy plus.

I'm intending to stop using OS X Server and go over to SyncMate. Even $40 is a minor cost compared to my wasted time, or indeed the money spent on my new MacBook Retina.
As I explained earlier, I lost all my Server settings when the AppStore attempted to update the software (when no update was actually available). I was initially willing to negotiate all the bugs when I set it up (with the notable help of TopSteve) but I don't want to repeat it. I assumed that once I downloaded Server, that would be it. I'd be able to choose what to do with it and it'd have a stable existence on my computer, but that doesn't seem to have been the case.
SyncMate handled my calendars perfectly, but failed with my 4,000-odd contacts. I assume that's because of the way I've arranged them for Server under my .local name rather than 'On my Mac'. If anyone else is converting from Server to SyncMate, I'd be interested in details about how they have re-organised their files.
If Eltima are reading this: Many Thanks! If Apple are reading this: but then they aren't . . . .

Mar 5, 2014 3:43 PM in response to Skakagrallby jayv.,I left the server sync in place and synced all contacts (no more than 1800). At this point of course the addressbook on my phone showed all duplicates but when I disabled the server sync (contacts > groups > unchecked server.local) all contacts were there on my phone. Through SyncMate I was also able to easily delete them all from the phone again and go right back to server syncing.
Switched back and forth like this a few times without issues. Does the sync log tell you why it didn't work?
