Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

It's free like the peanuts you get with the beer.  You have to buy the beer, and also to be in the pub.

But again, back to the original question:

Can I or can I not sync contacts, notes, calendar from Mavericks to an iOS and/or a non-iOS device without the Cloud?

    That is the question.

Wait, never mind. I don't see that as an option, currently. iCloud is your only choice for now.

I think iCloud is a good option. But it is an option.

If I can not sync locally anymore, I will not upgrade to Mavericks.

I`m very satisfied with my Apple products, but this kind of limitation would even force me away from Apple

    to be honest.

It is my choice if I want to put my data on Apple servers or keep it local.

This is also my situation.  I believe using iCloud to sync my Calendars, Contacts, Keychains and anything else I want to sync should be an option to use iCloud, not a requirement.

I am not going to end my relationship with Apple over this, but I will not upgrade to Mavericks. I guess that could mean that I can not buy anymore computers until this is fixed.  I will just have to keep my current computers running as long as I can or until I find a work around for this. I want to be responsible for my own security and backups. I want to keep all my data local unless I choose (as in option) to store it elsewhere.

I hope someone is reading these threads and elsewhere and will make syncing to iCloud an option and making iTunes and local sync an option as well.

I most likley will not upgrade to Mavericks unless and until this is corrected.

Are there any late model pre-Mavericks iMacs still for sale anywhere?

I spoke with Apple.  They validated that iOS7 and Mavericks will not sync calendar and contacts.

They provided me with this link to restore Mountain Lion if I want.

    Absolutely unbelievable!

I don't want to hand over all of my contacts to Apple, and I am not even sure I am legally allowed to regarding my business contacts (EU Privacy).

Why in god's name would they kill the local sharing option. I guess I'll be ******** about this in the cafeteria tomorrow. I hope someone can turn back the clock on this one.

So, here is what I did: I bought the OS X Server and run a local Calendar and Contacts server.

I switched all my iOS devices and OS X Calendar and Contacts application config to that server in the local network. And I exported my contacts and calendar entries from the local store in OS X to a file and then reimported them to the server store using the same OS X client applications. Now my devices are in sync again and should keep automatically synced whenever I am home an the Mac is running.

Thats a shame that the local sync work no more…

Hey Apple! Do you really believe that I use any cloud-service after this summer? Didn't read the news?!

I am not willing to submitting your cloud-sync! So alter the course or OS X 10.8 was my last Mac OS. And I am not the only one with this attitude!

@Pacific_Str: The data is stored on my MacBook, the Backup is going directly to my Time Capsule via Time Machine.

FOR ALL THOSE WHO HAVE NOT UPGRADED TO OS MAVERICK AND ITUNES 11.1.2 BEWARE THAT AFTER THE UPGRADE ALL LOCAL SYNC IS DISABLED!!!!! However unbelievable it is Apple has done this without any warning. So here I am sitting with an IOS7 iPhone and a Maverick Macbook and the two contan totally different information. Furthermore Apple's latest innovation is to sync Keychain via iCloud. (Imagne your business partner knocking on your door asking you to handover your keys and bank account numbers and PINs!!!)

How did you do this?  Is this a work around to the Mavericks iCloud only syncing problem.  Where can I find detailed info on how to do this.  I want to buy a new iMac, but they only come with Mavericks... and I really do not want to run Mavericks if my only syncing option for my calendar and contacts is using iCloud.

I've been thinking about a home server anyway, this just pushes the issue a little.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Mac users in the US might have some expectation of privacy for their data when sync occurs using iCloud.

However, for those of us outside the US - there is absolutely no legal protection from US surveillance authorities and for that reason, the ability to sync locally is important especially for any data that is considered sensitive such as legal/health/confidential.

OS X Mountain Lion already took away the ability to sync Notes and Reminders while leaving Calendar, Contacts ok to sync locally so the writing was on the wall unfortunately.

I'll try Boglott's suggested solution so as to maintain control of my own information, but it's disappointing that Apple is taking away something that has worked for a long time with no explanation as to why they are doing it. It could be that they are being forced to do so by surveillance authorities to make it easier for them to access (I'm sure it's more effort to tap in to our computers directly than it is to call up sync'd data from Apple)...which would be even more disappointing.
