Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Fact: your post is boring and of zero technical benefit to anyone.

Nope. iCloud is behind. All net storage is old school. Apple has made a stunning strategic error deprecating their one golden goose: iTunes.

Zero technical benefit in your post. Unhelpful and unworthy of these discussions.

    Hi AndyD ...

... and for all the others, that want to give OS X Server a try to retrieve local sync.

I stopped reading this thread at page 10, maybe someone else posted in the meantime an instruction for OS X Server?

What I found out about the solution with OS X Server 3.0 is the following (and all those, who know better, please correct me):

Since 10.7 OS X Server is no longer a standalone OS but an upgrade to the regular OS X. Likewise the Mac OS X you can get this upgrade in the Mac-Appstore.

Moreover I read, that it runs like an app, which can be started and stoped like any other app - not really sure, if this is true.

There is an overview over the Tech Specs on Apples HP and as well some documentation to the server software.

And, I found in a german forum a short instruction for setting up the necessary services for the local sync between host and clients on the server. It's not necessary to run OS X Server on an extra machine, it also can run on your main working computer. Since this post is good structured, it might help, even if you don't understand German.

    apfeltalk.de

All in all not too complex and like the german author of the post says - it works and it works fine!

At the moment I cannot translate it, since it's 5.45 am and I'm too tired, but if there is further interest I can do it and post it the following days -

    edit: minor corrections and additions

... and DON'T forget to make backups before ... ... and only use copies of the contacts/calender-data for the first steps with OS X Server and your device

    YES, PLEASE DO ... TIA!

The OSX server upgrade is only 20 bucks, not much for peace of mind ... but my German is too rusty. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    EDIT ...

Just downloaded the OSX Server. It does look and behave like an app. Have not configured it yet. The bits that interest me most are:

    Calendar Server

    • Share calendars, schedule meetings and events, and book conference rooms

    • Standards-based CalDAV server for access from Mac, iPad, iPhone and PC

    • View availability with free/busy lookups

    • Email invitations and push notifications

    Contacts Server

    • Synchronize contacts with Mac, iPad and iPhone

    • Allow multiple users to access and update contacts

    • Standards-based CardDAV server

    Hello ChrisW£,

I can indeed confirm that my MacBook Pro running CalDAV and CardDAV doesn't go into sleep mode by itself at the moment despite according settings in Power Settings. But I'm not yet sure this is because of the server processes. Have to do some experiments first to be sure.

I guess installing the OSX Server on a VM on your Mac should work. But it's a huge overhead since you always have to turn on your VM to sync, including to  your local Calendar and Address applications on your Mac. I'm not sure this is really what you want.

    KiltedTim

...that is the insane part of it: Apple has screwed up its higher value customers who own 2, 3 or even more Apple devices. The 95% who simply owns an iPhone probably do not care, as you said. Apple's secret feedback system is the most frustrating black hole of any customer engagement tools by any company: take your time and write your comments and see what happens....NOTHING!!!!. Apple broke their TOS when they did not warn those upgrading to Mavericks what they will lose....

Maybe you should look at your own posts in this thread before accusing others of that. KiltedTim posted some actual facts about the situation. All you've posted is ridiculous nonsense: "All net storage is old school." - ha ha! What utter tosh...

I agree ois-isi, iCloud is not an option.

I've been deleted twice for no other reason than that admin disliked my negative comments.

Comments that were no different to many still up here.

I have now written to our countrie's (Australia) consumer advocates, governement and private about this issue.

Net storage is quite old school. Circa 1996: thin clients are all we're talking about here. Network Computer Reference Profile.

That essentially how Apple & other cloud vendors are treating these separate hosts & customers. They may have minimal on board storage (Chromebook, Macbook Air, iPad) but in essence, it's 1996 all over again.
