Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I love Apple, but this their choice of not support in maverick the sync service with outlook makes me really angry. I'm planning to move to android phones although with true sorrow. ...In the past, the sync with outlook has never worked well because many times and without logic it duplicated contacts and calendars requiring hours of cleaning in "Calendar" "Contact" & "Outlook", but at least you could use the program you wanted. Nobody ever Apple and Microsoft have had the willingness to fix a sync function properly and reliably, and this is not serious by large Companies. I do not like the idea of Cloud proposes anyone at all and should be a choice for the users to have its data out of their devices.

Wait a short while before you jump ship; rumors abound with enough frequency and consistency to make one think that this transgression is fixed in the next release of Mavericks.  As one who actually moved from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion after trying it for 10 days, I'm holding my breath in (optimistic) anticipation.

Just to put your mind at ease.  Local sync (contacts and calendar for now) is returning back in 10.9.3 and the next iternation of itunes.

It's not Apple's choice. Microsoft make Outlook and it is they who have chosen not to support the industry standard CardDAV and CalDAV protocols on Outlook.

See Microsoft's own support article here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2648915

I'm planning to move to android phones

How will that help? Outlook still won't support CalDAV and CardDAV which Google Sync (and most other sync systems) use.

If you insist on using Outlook, you'll have to switch to a sync system that Microsoft supports - namely its own proprietary Exchange system - which the iPhone supports anyway.

So it is rumoured . When it is announced by Apple he may put his mind at ease.

What makes you think that other companies including Apple are not doing the same?

Tracking in the iPhone, remember that? The way it was done IIRC was a little shady.

Do Apple buy info from Google et al? IDK but makes them just as bad if they do surely?

Then there are the ones/corporations that condone privacy violations and still rely on google for their search engines, where do they think all the data comes from that make the result as comprehensive as it is?

Each to their own. But I think the choice will come down to the best of a bad bunch.

    You have 10.9.3 already?

    How did you do that.

... given the choice of all the companies who are after our data as you suggest, Apple being the least agressive and invasive, and Android/Google being the most agressive,  then Apple stuff is the "best of a bad bunch"?

    If so I agree.

Gotcha. I use Apple products as I like the aesthetics they exhibit, both hardware and interface, (excepting the flat stark iOS7 that is). I don't believe for one moment that they're in a different class from the others though.

Anyway, I can't prove any of this so I'll shutup.

While I have my concerns, I must say it makes me feel better that Apple's business model is not Collecting and selling customer data, like Google and others. Apple stated to have no interest in customer's data beyond adoption numbers and such (can't find the article atm). With this in mind I consider Apple to be the lesser of all 'evils' out there. I'm glad USB sync is coming back, they wouldn't have done that if they needed our data for profit (I think).

I'm still running OS X server for my syncing at the moment and since I started using it I have enabled a lot more features. Caching is GREAT! NetRestore is very nice if you install/reinstall machines regularly, Configuration profiles too pretty neat. And of course the syncing of contacts, calendars, notes etc. It's not for everyone but I'd still recommend users check it out as a sync alternative and more.

Whilst I've no proof that AAPL are guilty of course, after experience with a couple of large institutions, (US), I've lost faith in them. I've seen that they have a public and a private face and despite having regular and mandatory ethics and anti corruption training etc, let's just say that I still have reservations.

That said, I'm sure most companies that aren't in the businees of selling or manipulating customer data aren't always above using the data that others provide.

I used OSX Server on ML and it was Ok. I prefer the simplicity of local USB sync. Does your Mac still sleep on schedule, (not manually), now that you have Server installed?
