MAYBE this will help people. You need to set up your OWN SERVER.
I honestly did not read the whole thread. But I skimmed through it. I have No CLUE if this will help sync Outlook Contacts to iCal, HOWEVER this will sync all your devices (Apple) to your iCal / Contacts (Address Book) WITHOUT iCLOUD.
OS X Mavericks Server is a $20 download in the App Store. It allows you to make any computer running Mavericks into a server. Apple has forced the the user to now be a server for himself. If the consumer is concerned about privacy they can always be there own host. It is very nice and easy to set up.
Here is a link to a nice walk through. This guy named Todd Olthoff is very good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVfEicYfMTE
Software allows to connect to as many devices/computers/users as you want. Only $20. Limited only by what hardware you are using for the server.
Obviously the more RAM the better. and adding External Hard Drives for memory is good. and of course never turn off your computer. Add user profiles that can be logged into from anywhere just like the big boys.
Version 3.0 -for you bit hunters out there. They also have OS X Server for past OS versions but I do not know how user friendly they are. Todd has tutorials on them as well.
So $20 bucks and maybe an Apple Airport Express Router just to guarantee simplicity of setup. Router is probably better than any router your Broadband company has provided you AND you can use the extra older router as a Repeater for extended coverage for our big backyard.

Jul 14, 2014 5:03 AM in response to RgwoodNJ_kB0sc_2006by gumsie,Hi there.
OSX Server is no longer necessary assuming you want to sync Contacts and Calendars, (Notes is another kettle of fish). In 10.9.3 local syncing of these two items was returned.

Jul 14, 2014 5:42 AM in response to gumsieby RgwoodNJ_kB0sc_2006,Just to be clear.. local wireless syncing is back ?
Multiple computers
i.e. Home / Office Computer wirelessly syncing One Calendar and Contact on two phones ? Husband / Wife sharing 1 list on two phones.
I will be keeping my Server , I enjoy the ability to Send Secure Text Messages to users without going through a telephone company.

How about Outlook, has that been worked around ?
I heard it was Microsoft that pulled the plug on that one.
Thanks

Yes.

How do you think you are you sending secure text messages because you are running a server?
If you are sending any messages over a cellular network, you are going through a phone company.
If you are sending iMessages, they are encrypted on the iPhone before being sent.
If you are cellular, iMessages are sent as data over the cellular network.
If you are on wifi, iMessages are not sent over a cellular network.

OS X Server is nice without being complicated.

iMessages (always encrypted) can only be sent over the internet.
Perhaps you mean iMessages sent over wifi vs cellular?

Jul 14, 2014 7:26 PM in response to Chris CAby RgwoodNJ_kB0sc_2006,What I had hoped I was saying was, that sending encrypted messages between Users was possible over the internet via my secure network. They have to be logged in to receive.

Okay, I'm confused.
Are you logging into your server using a VPN?
What message app are you using?
If you are using iMessage, they are encrypted and go to Apple servers.

Jul 19, 2014 2:15 AM in response to Chris CAby RgwoodNJ_kB0sc_2006,As far as your iMessages question, this can be configured on your iOS devices, it will work with your iPhone. You would need to use a client that does Instant Messaging. I use Beejive which allows you to add various clients. iMessages on Server is based on the jabber protocol so any app that allows you to set up a jabber client should work fine.

Jul 27, 2014 7:04 AM in response to gumsieby tom.goecke,But unfortunately you still can't sync locally (i.e. Outlook contacts and calendars) AND iCloud (i.e. private contacts and calendars) - which was possible under 10.7 (?). - Bummer!

Aug 18, 2014 5:05 PM in response to gumsieby E. Kennedy,I have 10.9.4 and I cannot sync my Calendar on my iPhone 5s with my Calendar on my iMac using a direct USB connection between my iPhone and my iMac through iTunes.
According to the support document I read, this is not possible. It states:

I can and so can everyone else.
Local syncing of Contacts & Caledars was returned in iTunes 11.2 and Mavericks 10.9.3 back in May.

You mean this outdated article that was last updated on Nov 5, 2013? -> http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12117.

Aug 19, 2014 12:55 PM in response to Chris CAby E. Kennedy,I found what I was doing wrong - through trial and error since I didn't see any comments that were especially relevant to my issue since getting OSX Server seemed to be a disproportionate solution to what I thought was, and what turned out to be, a simple problem...
When I tried unsuccessfully earlier to sync Calendar between my iPhone and my iMac through iTunes, I did not check the box next to "During the next sync only, iTunes will replace the selected information on this iPhone with information from this computer." This time, I checked that box just to see what would happen and...sync worked! Not only through the USB connection to my iPhone, but also through WiFi on my iPad.
I don't know if that applies to, or helps, anyone else reading this thread, but hope it does since that's how I solved my problem!

Oct 7, 2014 4:27 AM in response to TopSteveby rajiv001,Hi TopSteve,
I have always found your suggestions very helpful. Now I am having a related problem with the new IOS 8 update.
After the latest IOS update on my IPhone 5C, any changes that are made to the IPhone Contacts do not flow through to the OS X server and the other Macs or IPads on the server. (I am using CARDDAV). Does anyone have this same problem?
I noticed that changes to Contacts made on my Mac on the same server DO flow through to the other devices. So the problem is only regarding the flow from IPhone to the server. Any help to trouble shoot would be appreciated.
Could you please check if you are having the same issues too?
Many thanks!
