Nov 3, 2013 12:45 AM in response to handsOFFmydataby Retiredthailand,Tried it 3x before, I get both of those screens. when I get the one showing my time machine backups, just like your second window, it says there is no complete back up to show. I have many and was going to back up to Oct 21 which should be before the upgrade came out. I am running Maverick now, and want to go back to my lion. Are you sure I dont have to erase my disk in the disc untility first and then restore with the time machine? I looked at the disc untiity and it says my time machine is good. This is a copy of the end of my time machine and I see many backups to use but none show up like in the window of your, its all blank.
Apple, why are you making me do this.
hands off, any help appreicated
these are teh instructions I used:

Nov 3, 2013 1:01 AM in response to Retiredthailandby Retiredthailand, what I can read on teh net, looks like i have to clean my disk, install mountain lion again, then do teh time machine backup. I think maverick cannot read my lion backups.
this looks like what I should do but I sure would like some conformation

Nov 3, 2013 1:01 AM in response to Gerrit7by Ptit-Loup,I had for long trouble with iTunes controlling everything. I refused to go for iCloud.
I had a bad feeling about Mavericks "free".
Now confirmed.
I will NOT install Mavericks. I had in mind buying an iPad. If iCloud is mandatory to synchronize, I will NOT buy an iPad. If I have to change my mobile phone, I will NOT buy an iPhone.
I was faithful, now I feel cheated. The end of a long story ? Apple has gone here one step too far.

Nov 3, 2013 2:20 AM in response to PandAteacherby RMH,To all those that bought new Macs (or might still contemplate, but do not want to loose local syncing):
I'm not sure, but if you bought SL before couldn't you perfom a clean install to get rid of M?

Nov 3, 2013 2:26 AM in response to RMHby snozdop,Snow Leopard is unlikely to contain the relevant hardware drivers etc, required for a recently released Mac.
Usually the minimum version of OS X that can be installed on any Mac is the one the came pre-installed on it.

Nov 3, 2013 3:52 AM in response to Gerrit7by Ptit-Loup,By the way, does anyone know where are the Address Book and the Agenda now hidden on a Mac ? It appears to me that Mountain Lion already hides them. Hope I am wrong ! Was it a sort of preparation to the worst ?
A friend of mine installed M, but suppressed iCloud after installation as he just had a Mac. He lost Address Book and Agenda.
Another one just went for iCloud, lost his Address Book, and recovered I don't yet know how. He still used Moutain Lion. He will not install M, and never use iCloud.
There are probably many others. Apple, there is a real issue here...

On my computer, with both Mountain Lion and Mavericks, they're called Calendar and Contacts. Did you try searching for them with Spotlight?

Nov 3, 2013 5:21 AM in response to IdrisSeabrightby Ptit-Loup,Thank you Meg, but I didn't mean the application. I was looking for the data files.
Inbetween, I found them. The trick is that Mountain Lion hides the User Library...
Finder + Option-Go provides the missing link to this Folder, and then to the Application Support Folder. Address Book is there.

Nov 3, 2013 5:32 AM in response to Ptit-Loupby IdrisSeabright,Ah, yes, that was a feature that was introduced in Mountain Lion. Glad you sorted it out.

Nov 3, 2013 5:48 AM in response to IdrisSeabrightby Ptit-Loup,By the way, you might also know where to find data file(s) concerning the Calendar ?
This would be great !

Nov 3, 2013 5:51 AM in response to Ptit-Loupby IdrisSeabright,Sorry, haven't use the Calendar app on my Mac in years. For my needs, Google calendar works better.

Nov 3, 2013 6:27 AM in response to Gerrit7by Warren Mcbride,Well, after decades of Apple ownership, Apple no longer "just works" Something as simple as USB syncing now gone has lead me to realize that Apple wants total control. "My way or the Highway" if you will.
I have had the feeling over the last 5-6 years that I was uncomfortable with the direction Apple has headed. My experience with mobilme/icloud has been horrid and now Apple gives me no other option to sync.
I will be investigating other options and hope to find one that allows local syncing, NOT through a cloud.

Nov 3, 2013 7:04 AM in response to Warren Mcbrideby Moustache11,I will never use iCloud either. It's my choice and it's my right.
This is what I found but it's not very comfortable and it's difficult to use our devices this way for a long time.
I found 3 apps (one for calendar, one for notes and one for contacts) and I make a backup with each of the app that I mail to myself. I keep it on my MBP and I can work on the files.
Then I replace the old folders by the new ones.
It's just a backup but if I have a problem with let's say my iPhone, i have the backup on my MBP.
Of course it's not very easy and I have to work almost the all time with my iPhone...
I'll do that for a certain time until I'm bored with it.
Then if Apple solves the problem, OK. If not I'll buy a Samsung or something else, change my iMac, my iPad, my iPod, my iPodtouch,my MBP.

The instructions above are correct ones. I am stumped why the restore screen does not show any of your TM backups. I wonder if you ever deleted any of the older backups manually … still, the TM should detect incomplete incremental backups and do the entire HD again. Strange things can happen if you mess with older OSX backups after upgrade to new OSX, but it should show you the new OSX backups at least … scratching my head.
The other route … format HD, install fresh OSX, restore/install all apps, and restore your personal data … is another way to get back to Mountain Lion, albeit more cumbersome and you will not able to find/restore all user settings.
DO A MANUAL BACKUP OF YOUR PERSONAL DATA TO EXTERNAL DRIVE OR USB STICK BEFORE PROCEEDING.

Nov 3, 2013 1:54 PM in response to Gerrit7by chris0815,***?!? After iOS 7 I thought about buying an Android phone (there is no differnence anymore. Same ****...) and now this...
This is no option for me! I don't want to use iCloud for anything! Espeically not for calender and contacts. This is very sensitive data that does not belong in the hands of a big US company!
OK. Back to BSD on my Laptop...
