Q: How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Very true Snoz.  My concern lies in Apple's privacy policy:

    https://www.apple.com/privacy/

    What personal information we collect

    • When you create an Apple ID, register your products, apply for commercial credit, purchase a product, download a software update, register for a class at an Apple Retail Store, or participate in an online survey, we may collect a variety of information, including your name, mailing address, phone number, email address, contact preferences, and credit card information.
    • When you share your content with family and friends using Apple products, send gift certificates and products, or invite others to join you on Apple forums, Apple may collect the information you provide about those people such as name, mailing address, email address, and phone number.

How we use your personal information

    • The personal information we collect allows us to keep you posted on Apple’s latest product announcements, software updates, and upcoming events. It also helps us to improve our services, content, and advertising. If you don’t want to be on our mailing list, you can opt out anytime by updating your preferences.
    • We also use personal information to help us develop, deliver, and improve our products, services, content, and advertising.

This BLATANTLY says they're going to use my data and data I share about other people (contacts) for advertising.  I think THAT stinks.

    @snozdrop:

Unless you are a known criminal, drug dealer, human trafficker, terrorist or someone of that ilk, the NSA, FBI, GCHQ, CSA, HMRC, RAC or WD40 aren't going to have any interest in your contacts or calendar, and neither Apple or Google will just hand them over for no reason whatsoever.

    from der speigel:

It's naïve to imagine that if you introduce a weakness into a system you will be the only one to use it.

this is a ref to the fact that the NSA has created back doors, with the companies you mention'd permission, in their encryption standards in effect opening up access to their servers and files for any hacker in the world who wants to look. Tim Berners Lee was not impressed.

Whats in your calendar, contacts etc files will depend on whether you are a doctor, author, scientist etc who relies on a secure storage solution for confidential files and contacts

So how do you sync without iCloud then?

USB cable, through iTunes. As I always have. Using Mavericks and the latest iTunes.

Thanks mate. You are so cool!

Reading and comprehending is fundamental ...

Note:   These instructions apply only if you use OS X v.10.8.5 or earlier. If you use OS X Mavericks v.10.9 or later, your contacts, calendars, and other info are updated on your computers and iOS devices via iCloud. I am naïve in such dark arts but I have sneaking suspicions that the SyncServices Framework 8 that lurks within the depths of Mavericks might be somehow modifiable.

Or perhaps the SyncServices Framework 7 from Mountain Lion might work if it was reunited with Mavericks somehow.

Perhaps there are infinitely more learned folk who could discuss/debunk such ideas?

It's extremely naive to imagine that this data harvest is harmless "Unless you are a known criminal, drug dealer, human trafficker, terrorist or someone of that ilk".

This has been my first experience trying to solve a technical problem on the Apple Support Forum. The ad hominem attacks by KiltedTim, petermac87 and snoodop directed at anyone criticizing Apple have been particularly discouraging. The level of vitriol displayed on this board, particularly by the three people named above, is something that I have only previously seen in the comments sections of political Web sites.

I have done my best to communicate the syncing problem to all my friends who use Apple equipment. I have also told everyone I know not to upgrade at present to OSX Mavericks. None of these friends were aware of the problem until I informed them. Based on my experience, the true number of people who will be upset by this problem is far larger than exist at present. Most non-technical users will not immediately realize that syncing no longer works under Mavericks. I short, the problem will likely grow far larger than at present.

Apple is an extremely successful company with a huge cash reserve and with millions of users, such as myself, who have invested a great deal into using its technology and cannot easily switch. Nevertheless, from this point forward, I will certainly do everything I can to reduce my dependence on Apple, or on any other company, that abuses my trust. My issue with Apple is not this particular problem, but rather Apple's fundamental attitude towards customers, of which this problem is simply a small symptom.
