Messages hand in SMS, don't automatically switch to iMessage

When I send a text, it is automatically blue (SMS), and I've had many messages in the last 3 weeks hang unsent for up to weeks (if I didn't notice and tap and select 'send as text message') How do you get it to automatically send as a text if it hangs? Lots of unsent messages and confusion.
