Boot Camp Partition Taking a Very Long Time

I just got a brand new 2013 iMac with 3 TB Fusion Drive. Beautiful machine, but I decided to setup a windows partition on it for some necessary apps.

I got my windows install DVD ISO ripped off and put onto a USB key, and started going about setting a partition up for Windows. I know partioning a 3TB drive is probably going to take a while, but it has been over 24 hours already and it is still "Partioning Disk"

Everything is working fine while it does this, but is it normal for the drive to take this long to partition? If it is, that is fine, though it would be nice to know how long I should expect it to take. Another day? A week? Longer?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

It is not normal, minutes are how long it should take. You may have an issue recovering from this so first I'll ask if you have a backup of your drive (before doing anything).

I don't have an overall backup since the drive is very new, but any files of any particular importantance I still have on my old computer, so even losing everything wouldn't really hurt at all.

OK, can you exit the BootCamp app that's creating the partition at the moment?

It seems to be hanging, it's actually listed as Not Responding by the force quit menu.

Though I did just check the HD in Disk Utility, and it seems like there is a Windows Partition of the correct size, so I am starting to think BCA just crashed after successfully partioning.

If you have not already done so use Force Quit to end it, then reboot and check the partitions.

In the process of trying that, though very late at night here so I will have to check it in the morning. Thanks for your help though, hopefully it actually worked and it was just a false alarm of Boot Camp Assistant crashing at the end.

That is entirely possible, and (if so) fortunate, there have been a few horror stories posted here in the same (or very similar) circumstances.

Hi i have same problem i try to make a 200g Windows partion and it stands still for 1 hour now.

Is it hardware or is it software problem?

My Imac 3tb fusion drive is 3 days old

Had the same here on my new iMac received today : partitioning at 1/3 for too much long time to my taste. And suddenly, as I was seeing the Time Machine drive led blinking, I eject the drive... and the partition step ends few seconds later.
