Has anyone seen this? What causes it?
I've seen several times today my mail app while just quietly running in the background taking 100-200% (I assume that 100% = 1 of 8 possible threads on the i7 processor).

Do you have a functional problem? If not, I suggest you ignore it.
Yes it's a functional problem it's eating up resources for no apparent reason.
A good idea but I am only syncing with iCloud not google or anything else.
I don't consider this a real problem. If you weren't watching Activity Monitor or something similar, you wouldn't be aware of it.
Why should a simple email client running in the background waste so much resources? Of course it's a real problem.
