Ipod shuffle 4th generation not detected on itunes or macbook pro

The orange light on my fourth generation ipod shuffle turns on when it is plugged into my macbook pro, however, it isn't detected by my computer or itunes. Also, I tried plugging the ipod into my friends PC--and her computer said there was some kind of problem but didn't specify what it was. The ipod is working just fine, but I just can't edit the music on my ipod.

The friend's PC would need to have iTunes installed on it, for the shuffle to be recognized properly.

I assume this worked before, using the same Mac, since you have songs on the shuffle. If you have not since this problem occurred, try shutting down (powering off) the MacBook. You may also want to try disconnecting any other USB devices currently connected. Do this to reset the shuffle

Start up the MacBook, run iTunes, and connect shuffle to a direct USB port.
