iPhone 5S restarting itself
Anyone else having their 5S sporatically restarting itself? So far, there seems to be no pattern, other that I'm usually playing a word game on it when it happens.

'Resetting' or 'Restoring' might solve it temporarily but the bugs will return in a similar way.
"In most cases the hardware is fine. Frequent Apple users are encouraged to buy new devices through intricate pre-planned bugs like this and guess what they do. Use different wifi, icloud, sim card after the battery runs out and reboot using a different computer from a different location with a different finger! Or just move on to devices with much higher life-expectancy." in my opinion.
I had a battery problem with my iPhone 5s, and so I took my phone to an Apple Store and was also given a replacement. I've had it for about a month now and it is always restarting, but there are absolutely no patterns. It even happens when my phone is locked.
Exactly the same thing here. My 5s battery "expanded" while it was stuck in a "verifying update" loop while trying to install iOS 10.3. I took the phone to an Apple Store and they replaced it for $80 off warranty. The phone they brought out looked new, but now that I've had it for a few weeks, it keeps rebooting to the Apple logo once or twice a day. The reboots are seemingly random and are not tied to heavy usage or heat.
I took the replaced phone to an apple genius and he tested it and found no records of any reboots. But they are clearly happening. A few hours after the appointment the phone spontaneously rebooted right in my hand, but this time it got stuck in a boot loop. The Apple logo kept blinking on and off, and eventually after some minutes, it booted correctly.
I am not sure what to do at this point. First Apple melts my perfectly working 5s with an update bug, and now Apple refuses to replace the new phone because there is no "proof" that it's rebooting randomly.
Just wanted to chime in with the same issue on my iPhone 5S; running latest iOS (as of 5/24/2017, which is 10.3.2) and all apps are up-to-date.
It started about a month or thereabouts back. At first I thought it might be the case (perhaps the power button was being inadvertently held/touched by the case) but it's happened several times with no case on the phone.
Have researched online and found no viable solution that worked for me (e.g., turning this or that off, etc.). I suspect it's related to a specific app and was hoping Apple had a fix, but it does not appear so. I imagine that, since I'm not seeing any ramp-up of posts about other models encountering the same issue, it's unique to the 5S and my only option is to buy a newer model iPhone.
I too am having this issue. My 5S is up to date both in software and apps. But for the last 6 weeks it will randomly re-boot. Most of the time I have it sitting next to me on the couch or it's in my pocket. I can also have all apps closed and not running in the background. My thinking it's Apple's way of telling me to spend $700 on a new computer, er phone. Oh yah, I can buy a new laptop for less than I can buy a new iPhone.
Other than it rebooting randomly it works pretty well. It will give me problems with the arrow back button in messaging. Takes several tape to go back.
Okay guys since last time I replied on this thread i.e. 12th May 2017 till now my phone is working fine. The culprit was facebook and its messenger apps. I removed both of them and attached my phone with PC and restored it with iTunes. Also there has been an update from Apple (10.3.2) I have updated to it as well thinking maybe they fix this issue. Now it's been almost 25 days and phone is working perfect thank God.
How do I know the problem is with facebook app?
Well I just tried to focus on when and what thing/app causing this. First I removed all apps that were open in background (you know the double tap on home button and it shows all running apps) there were like tons of apps on my phone running in background I closed all of them and then tried to open my mostly used apps one by one and found that facebook was causing the problem even if this thing runs in your background this will cause problem. (For me it was facebook app you have to find yours maybe its something else in your case or maybe facebook app). I removed the facebook app and to be on safe side I removed messenger as well. Then to completely make sure that both apps are completely removed, I attached my phone with iTunes via PC and restored the iOS and thank God the problem is fixed. i have not installed facebook / messenger again so far. Phone is working like normal.
> re/Removing Facebook & FB's Messenger app
I was so hopeful this would turn out to be the issue, but I can report (at least in my case) it is not. After deleting both the Facebook app and Messenger app, I went about a day without a spontaneous restart, and it just restarted a few minutes ago, sitting on my desk.
I'm pretty much at my wit's end with this. Had never had this issue until 10.3 that I can recall, so something Apple introduced is either causing the restarts or is conflicting with some app on my iPhone and that's causing the restarts.
I've wiped/reinstalled, turned off this or that, turned off background refresh on all but a few weather apps; no help. I guess my next try will be to turn off background refresh on my non-Apple mail app (Airmail) and see if that might work. It's all buckshot now; trying anything at this point.
I have been having the same restart problem which began in May, I restored my phone and for two days it was fine and then the random restarts happen. ugh! My solution is to go to a non apple phone. Sorry apple I need a phone that doesn't let me down
Yep, me and my sister's iPhone 5s is rebooting by itself. I've even talked to ATT and he has the same problem with his phone. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple put a bug in the new software to cause this problem so people would go out and buy their new iPhone. It's a conspiracy - Apple worm gremlins!! 😮
I have started having this problem too on my 5s. i am thinking it's after I updated 10.3.3 that it has started coming.ith r
done with reset restore dfu restore. and it works fine for one day and now showing similar signs again.
I don't see a pattern, sometimes it's when i am browsing but it's also when i am not doing anything.
anyone knows, how to troubleshoot this thing!!
My 5s has been doing this for 2 years, irregardless of OS version.
It will always reboot on charge.
It will randomly reboot for weeks and the not dobit for months, then start doing it again.
It is a hand me down, previous owner says it never happened to them
There needs to be a better way of determining which app is causing it yhan trial and error.
****, the diagnostic stuff makes no sense and I haven't found an explana
Just wanted to say that I got Apple to replace my brand new 5S that was experiencing the reboot loop, and the 2nd brand new one is doing the exact same thing. I specifically did this at a different Apple store in the hopes of avoiding a bad batch.
So that's 2 brand new iPhone 5S phones, directly from Apple, from 2 separate Apple stores that are randomly rebooting.
Eventually I had no choice but to get a new phone (was this the plan all along?).
It's clear to me that this is either a very large bad batch of 5S phones, or that it's a iOS software issue. I made sure that I only had stock Apple apps installed, and both phones were still rebooting randomly and sometimes even getting stuck in a boot loop.
The Apple "geniuses" would not admit that there was a problem with the phone because their diagnostics procedure showed that the phone has not been rebooting. Only after it had happened in his hands multiple times, as he was diagnosing it, did he finally agree to replace it.
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

If the issue persists...
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and Restore

Make sure you have the Latest Version of iTunes (v11) Installed on your computer
iTunes free download from www.itunes.com/download
Mine just did it.
