Is a battery problem more likely than a charger port type of problem?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), just over a year old
Does the MBP operate with the charger attached? If not, that is not a good sign.

no, unfortunately the macbook does not work with the charger. this leads me to beileve that the problem is based around the actual charger port.
Macbook Pro stopped accepting charge, and subsequently died.. what could be the problem? (tried other chargers)
