I could use some advice for path forward....

Older (2009) 17" Macbook Pro, heavy usage so I can't live without!

Been gettting kernel panics about 1x week until this week, now almost daily. Latest KP report is below. I've got a call in to local folks who help me with stuff, no Apple store in town. What's best path forward?

Thanks in advance... hopefully, it will keep working a few more days until I can either replace or get help!

I am wondering if something is going on with some update. I posted in the Snow Leopard forum a few days ago about daily crashes and just found this thread. My panic report looks nearly identical:

For both, many 3rd-party kexts indicated. Most likely, one of those is the culprit.

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall those 3rd-party things until you isolate which is causing the problem. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember. See

Thanks for the reply with the links. I am basically using 4 applications whenver it crashes: (1) Firefox, (2) Chrome, (3) Textedit, and (4) Utorrent. It crashes when I have other applications open and it crashes when I don't have other applications open. It seems to me that the only application that has been upgraded since these crashes started is Firefox. Firefox almost always appears in the crash report: BSD process name corresponding to current thread: firefox

I can't make any sense of the codes that are listed in the crash report. I have read some FAQs about the numbers (the first link you provided) but I comparing the codes and my crash report is beyond my tech knowledge. The only non-code info that appears that seems connected to the crash is:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):

com.apple.GeForce(6.3.6)@0xc78000->0xd2efff

dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.3.6)@0x98a000

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x97d000

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x944000

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x95b000

Anyway, I will look at these links you shared, baltwo; however, if you see something in the report that jumps out at you, please let me know what I could do to solve that problem.

One more thing. I have booted in safemode and everything was fine but at some point I need to re-start again in non- safe mode, don't I? And then the problem starts all over again.

Apps that cause KP's do not necessarily need to be running in order to cause a KP. In your initial KP report my guess that one of the following is causing your problems:

com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 5.0 9376.600588

com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 5.0 9376.600588

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 5.0 9376.600588

com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 5.0 9376.600588

com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 5.0 9376.600588

com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver 1.0.2

com.markspace.iokit.IOMissingSyncMassStorage 199

I'd start with Parallels and first check to see if you have the most up-to-date version installed and go down the line with the other apps. If all are up-to-date then I'd recommend following the developers instructions and uninstalling each one by one until the KP's cease.

Thanks for this reply. This is helpful. I just updated the Rogue Media application, which updated InstantOn but I will contact them to find out about this HermesAudio since I don't know what that does. I will likely just uninstall Pro Tools (an audio editing program that relates to the Digidesign items listed in your post) since I use a newer version at work. I have no diea what this is:

com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.7.1

A google search just produces other kernel panic reports. Any advice about how tor deal with this?

Sorry for the slow reply. I was traveling for work, and can now rededicate attention to this probelm.

I didn't insteall or unistall the kexts because I don't know where to find

com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard5.7.1

I did upgrade the instanton

com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn5.0.1

But I still had multiple crashes. I contacted Rogue Media to find out about

com.rogueamoeba.HermesAudio4.2.0

and am waiting to hear back. I don't know what this is.

I booted in safe boot mode a while back, but I misunderstood what I should do (i.e., I booted in safe mode tested various programs and then re-booted). There weren't any problems with panics during that safe boot but I didn't run long enough to truly test. I would like to deal with this kext first and then re-try safe mode.

I have had a crash when trying to open a media file with VLC but I would say that 95% of my kernel panic freezes occur when I am doing something with a Web browser. And the deep sleeps happen with software programs running.

Thanks again for your help with this. I will post again after I hear back from Rogue and do a re-test of safe mode, but if you have some advice about the pacesupport, that would be grea.

I am running in safe mode now and will report back. I did get a reply from the folks at Rogue Media in response to my question about theose two com. notations that listed their software. They wrote the following:

"Thanks for those details. It looks like the kernel panic has something to do with the video card on your Mac - the backtrace specifically hits all of those drivers. While Audio Hijack Pro - or in this case, Firefox - may be the active application, it's a graphical trigger that's causing the kernel panic, so it's probably something to bring to Apple's attention."

I will test that out, but I am wondering if I am missing something, since the link for Hardware Tests lists almost every OS except 10.6.8. The link notes that 10.5.5-10.6.7 should run the test from D2 of the install disks and lists 10.7- by holding down D when starting up. I am not seeing anything for 10.6.8.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

I still have my disks because the iMac had Leopard when I bought the computer but I'm running the last version of Snow Leopard. Do I use disk 2 or do I hold down D for 10.6.8?

Feb 5, 2014 1:58 PM in response to baltwo

I did two passes on the hardware test (with the second pass running the longer advanced test) and have no hardware errors. For the past two days (prior to shutting down to run the hardware test) I did not have any crashes while running in safeboot mode. So, I have no idea what to do next since this seems to be a software problem of some kind or software interacting with hardware in some way.

I have another old laptop at home that is also running snow leopard. I don't have any problems with that laptop. It does not have Pro Tools or Audio Hijack Pro, two programs that connect to:

com.rogueamoeba.HermesAudio 4.2.0

com.digidesign.iokit.DigiIO 8.0.1f1

com.digidesign.iokit.DigiDal 8.0.1f1

com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn 5.0.1

I also don't run Utorrent on that laptop, which I have to use for a current research project with international partners because my ISP is throttling file transfer sites. Additionally, I have not updated the software on that laptop after I started running into these kernel panics on my desktop because I don't want that laptop to start freezing up all the time as well.

Any advice?

On another note, each of yor psots, baltwo, have been helpful. I'm not seeing where I can mark those as helpful so you are given the points you deserve for your help. I only see the "like" option.
