Q: How to get rid of app store update notification

I have run the updates I want after purchasing Mountain Lion, and wished to install only 5 of the 10 or so updates available. Nonetheless I am continually being asked to update the other 5 elements which I do no want. How do I get rid of the "update available" tag on the AppStore icon in the dock?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), G3 Wallstreet, OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.3.9 (Panther)

Note that the instructions in the Apple article are apparently not up to date for Mountain Lion users. What works for me:

    1. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu.

    2. From the "Store" menu, verify that you are signed in (by seeing the "Sign Out" menu item) & If necessary, sign in.

    3. Right (or Control) Click on an update you want to ignore anywhere in its entry except on the "Instal" button.

    4. "Hide Update" (not "Ignore Update") should appear in a popup. Choose that option to stop the reminders.

To reverse the process & reveal all the updates you have hidden, choose "Show All Software Updates…" from the Store menu. (That menu choice only appears if you have hidden one or more updates.)

Thanks Joe, but because I purchased and downloaded Mountain Lion from the App Store, if I click on Software Update in the Apple Menu, it just directs me to the App Store.

Thanks RC-R. I followed all your instructions and they worked perfectly. I don't know how this happened, but it was your answer that solved the problem whereas Joe's earlier answer was the helpful one. I seem to have got my compliments the wrong way round!

This should be very obvious but if I go to the Apple Menu/Software Update, I do not see the "Store" Menu

Thanks Joe, I am not quite sure how to attach images, but I can assure you that when I go to the Apple Menu/Software Update, I am automatically redirected to the App Store and thence to the menu corresponding to the image you have attached above. I guess it comes to the same thing in the end.

It is in the menu bar at the top of the screen, not inside the store Window:

I just wanted to *confirm* the solution proposed by R C-R. (2014 July, OSX 10.9.2)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------

[iBurger: click on the area, NOT THE BUTTON]
