Q: Photostream photos to web and how to identify file

I fondly remember MobileMe and miss it so much. Photostream should be so much better, but I seem to find issues with it that sours the experience.

I've just finished a photo assignment and wanted to let the client review the results on the web, where I streamed over 100 photos. I told her to pick out the best ones and send me the file names so we could post process them. Well, when I went out the to website to check the photos, I realized that there are no file names assigned to the photos. You can 'Like' a photo or leave a comment, but there is no way for you to say 'I like img-2002.jpg and want 5 copies at 5x7.'

Instead, I have to tell the client to download the photos and tell me the filenames on the downloads. Does anyone know a better way to photostream images and display the file names? Thanks.

Aperture 3, OS X Mountain Lion, imac i7

Photostream was never intended as a replacement for MobileMe so it might not be the right tool to use for this. You could use a site like filcker or 500px or picasa or any one of the scores of image sharing sites. That might be your best bet.

I've never looked at  a shared stream so I'm not sure what comments can be left. Is it not possible for the client to indicate the  5 5x7 copies in the comments field?

Finally you could add the filename to the image as a watermark. BorderFX would make this relatively painless

But I really think using an alternative site would be your best bet.

    regards

You can do all this from within Aperture, including adding a watermark.

I won't go into too many specifics, the basics are:

Select the image you wish to share.

    File > Print Image

    Select Contact Sheet

Adjust your settings to get the size you require, my example has one image per page, you can do more.

    Select your watermark options

Select your Title options, logo etc.

    Select print

    Select PDF (Bottom right)

    Select Save PDF to Aperture

An import dialogue opens in Aperture now, asking where you want to import the file and in what format.

Add images to an exiting project, select the project from the drop down menu (ideally into teh project they origianlly came from) .

Select jpg as the image format

    Change the name as required.

The contact sheets now save as individual jpg pages (i.e. watermarked image with image details etc) into the selected project. (If you can't see them you may have filters on, the new images arent star rated or tagged.)

    Select the newly created items

    Select Share

Name and create a shared Photostream.

    Here's one I made earlier:

    That's clever  .

I use EditDrop when I need to.  Which is not often, so while I can recommend it, I don't know what alternatives there may be.

For Photo Stream, Frank's selection is excellent: use the comment field.  You (the photographer) get notified immediately (and can set the notification style).

It is clever but it's a hold lot easier using BorderFX

Selet the image export ot BorderFX add file name info, return to Aperture.

Does BorderFX add watermarks and cn you do a large batch of images at the same time ? Never used it.

You can add as many comments as you like using the comments field. Just press the the + sign in the call out in the upper left corner of the thumbnail.

You can add any text to an image ungi BorderFx but it is probebaly only one at a time, never tried more then one.

I missed that part of your method, being able to do multiples (that is the case with yours right?)

Unless I've missed something, the problem is that you can't comment using teh web interface, just through iOS or Aperture/iPhoto. If the customer is the average non-iphone owning PC user they can't comment, so they have to try and describe to you which phot's they want.

The method I mentioned is actually pretty quick and can do 100's of images in one go if you want.

Yep, basically select as many images as you want and create a contact sheet with them.

Yes, you can select multiple images at once, and in addition to adding text (fom metadata presets) you can lace watermarks.

You can comment  and contribute from Windows 7 PCs, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4379

What do I need to be able to comment on a shared stream?

To comment on a shared stream, you will need an iCloud account and a compatible device and software:

    • iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6.0 or later
    • PC with Windows 7 or later and the iCloud Control Panel 2.1 or later
    • Mac with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 or later and either iPhoto 9.4 or later or Aperture 3.4 or later

But thats still not a very good solution. The problem is that the client would have to install iCloud Control panel and open an  iCloud account just to be able to order prints, I wouldn't ask anyone to do that!! It's much easier to look at the images on photostream with then file numbers attached, then email you or call you with the file names, they won't care how you got the file name there, either BorderFX or a contact sheet will give the same result to them.

In our experience it's all a bit of a moot point anyway. We used this method for a couple of months and the nubmer that converted to sales dropped off dramatically. We got the opinion that because people had easy access to their photo's they lost their impact, they got used to seeing them and showing them to friends, and the magic wore off. We also know people were copying them despite the watermark. We can't affored to run a business like that so have gone over to viewings in the studio.
