I replaced my kids 4 year old Macbook HD with an SSD and noticed that it boots up and shuts down faster than my late 2010 13" MBA. Any thoughts why? The MB gets to the login screen in about 15 seconds. My MBA takes about 30. Could it be all the programs that get loaded up? Could it be a fresh install on the MB and a couple OSX upgrades to my MBA?

yes, thats to be expected that a fresh SSD install with nearly no APPS is faster than the Air which is loaded with APPS.
My new Air is about 12 seconds slower to boot now than when new with many of my APPS set to start at bootup, ...that and about 50 APPS I have on my Air.
Where's the best place to check to see what's loading at boot? My Login Items only show 3 items, but I'm sure there's more loading. I imagine using Terminal would help me find the items but I'm not sure where to check.
go to activity monitor, and check disk activity and usage.
That makes sense. Do this on boot and see what's running. But how do I keep something from running? Has to be in a startup config somewhere.

It doesn't show everything, though. For instance, I've got Parallels installed. But it's not showing here, and I'm pretty sure it runs a couple of things on system boot.
I'll give it a shot. Looks like regular Login Items. Something else to start on boot! 😁

With the launchctl command, you can list and disable daemons (system services) that run upon boot up. Just be careful you don't turn off any of the Apple provided stuff. And make a backup beforehand, it's way too easy to screw up something.
Upgraded to 10.9 and I must say Wow! Much, much snappier and faster. Feels like I reformatted and started over. Gained almost 10Gb too. FWIW
Yes, my Air now has 8 second boot.......before Mavericks it was 22 or so seconds
APPS open much faster, even Photoshop Pro just snaps open.
Mavericks is truely amazing, far more than anyone would dare think about a new OSX
Usually new operating systems bog things down a bit.........absolutely OPPOSITE here. 😉
Photoshop CS4, 4 seconds and up and running! What ever they did to Mavericks sure is working! Internet is faster too. Shutdown is about 5 seconds. Loving this!!!
