Windows 8.1 Brightness problems. Screen to dim.

I had to install a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 on my Boot Camp partition. After I installed Windows I went ahead and installed the drivers and stuff I downloaded through Boot Camp Assistant earlier.

My screen is dim now though. I have the brightness turned all the way up. I also turned of the auto-brightness as another discussion suggested.

Windows is all up to date, and I also got an update for the nvidia drivers, but it is still dim.

I found a temporary fix accidentally when I was in device manager. Under Monitors it lists only Generic PnP Monitor, which I checked for updates on. It says the driver is from Microsoft from 2006 under properties. The fix is when I disable the device and then enable it. The screen goes back to a normal brightness. However it only lasts anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes and then goes back to being dim.

What can I do to try and fix this problem?

Looks like 8.1 has a setting for "Adaptive Brightness".. you can turn it off in the Advanced Section of Power Management.

Thanks Michael.

This solved it for me.

In my case, I also have a Thunderbolt display plugged into my Retina macbook pro. The Thunderbolt display was working fine, and it was my laptop screen that was dim (despite being at full brightness setting). Turning off adaptive brightness did the trick!

Cheers,

Tarique.

I've figured it out! It's so simple!

It has to do with the adaptive brightness. Go into "More power settings," click on your current profile's "Change plan settings." Then click "Change advanced power settings."

In the advanced window, scroll down to "Display" and click the dropdown. Then click the dropdown for "Enable adaptive brightness" and turn both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to off.

Click apply and you're done!

Following these simple instructions from the Windows Help worked immediately.

Nicholas Marc and others were correct about the Adaptive brightness for the desktop.

I turned it OFF and boom, my clear bright screen returned to the luster to which I am accustomed.

Set brightness and contrast

You can set the brightness and contrast for most monitors using buttons or other controls on the monitor. If you aren't sure how to adjust the brightness and contrast on your monitor, check the manual or the manufacturer's website. You can also check to see if your PC has an automatic brightness setting. And if you have a laptop, you can adjust the brightness in Windows.

To adjust brightness automatically

Some PCs adjust screen brightness automatically based on how much light there is in the room where you're using the PC. To see if your PC has this setting, follow these steps.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)
  2. Tap or click PC and devices, then tap or click Display.
  3. Make sure the Adjust my screen brightness automatically slider is turned on. (If you don't want the screen brightness to change automatically, tap or click the Adjust my screen brightness automatically slider to turn it off.)
  4. Tap or click Apply.

Thanks nicholas marc

I actually had the same problem and fixed by checking settings! I actually tried the method that "Admiral Kirk" pointed out and that did exactly nothing! In windows 8.1 the settings app changed alot so it took me a while. Under PC Settings->PC and Devices->Power and Sleep turn off the switch "Adjust my screen brightness automatically"! That fixed it!

Hello All:

Just wanted to pass along that I tried a number of the suggestions addressing the "dim screen" problem with Windows 8 being run using Boot Camp. Azeemughal's suggestion corrected my problem. I have a circa 2013 MBP 15", and the screen would have been unusable if the "dim screen" in Windows 8 could not have been corrected. Additional fine tuning can be done using the nVidia control panel, but as long as the light sensor was present in the device manager there was no way to get the screen to a usable level of illumination. Many thanks to all!
