Windows 8.1 Brightness problems. Screen to dim.

I had to install a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 on my Boot Camp partition. After I installed Windows I went ahead and installed the drivers and stuff I downloaded through Boot Camp Assistant earlier.

My screen is dim now though. I have the brightness turned all the way up. I also turned of the auto-brightness as another discussion suggested.

Windows is all up to date, and I also got an update for the nvidia drivers, but it is still dim.

I found a temporary fix accidentally when I was in device manager. Under Monitors it lists only Generic PnP Monitor, which I checked for updates on. It says the driver is from Microsoft from 2006 under properties. The fix is when I disable the device and then enable it. The screen goes back to a normal brightness. However it only lasts anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes and then goes back to being dim.

What can I do to try and fix this problem?

While it is not as easy as being able to control with the key board, starting with left-click to destop, selecting Screen Resolution,

then right click Advanced Settings,

then click Colour Management and again in resulting menu,

select Calibrate Display under the Advanced tab,

when you get to the Adjust Gamma slider, you can make your display brighter or darker.

Double click pic inserted to see it larger.

Aaron and anyone else experiencing a similar issue...

I loaded the Bootcamp v5.0.5033 drivers on my 2009 MBP 17" (MacBook 5,2) running Windows 8.1 with success; additionally, laptopvideo2go.com has an modded INF capible of installing the latest NVIDIA drivers for even older models (requires Advanced boot-F7 to temporarily disable signed driver enforcement). However neither of these should be necessary for your issue.

For anyone like me experiencing an issue with the brightness function controls not working, see the following thread:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1567916

This thread has 2 simultaneous but different topics happening, one for Adaptive brightness settings in the Windows power controls, and the manual brightness adjustment with a MacBook (and possibly others) laptop function keys; my reply is in regards to the latter. It appears the brightness controls are now controlled by Windows rather than the Bootcamp Keyboard OSD manager. Strange as the backlit keyboard and volume function keys show the on-screen display and work fine, but the brightness is the default windows OSD slider and does not change.

As amk29j and bb426 confirm, the issue is resolved by disabling the 'Generic PNP Monitor'; upon rebooting, the "Brightness" FN-Control is now functioning back on the OSD and the Bootcamp Control Panel has a tab for it.

Cheers~

I actually had the same problem and fixed by checking settings! I actually tried the method that "Admiral Kirk" pointed out and that did exactly nothing! In windows 8.1 the settings app changed alot so it took me a while. Under PC Settings->PC and Devices->Power and Sleep turn off the switch "Adjust my screen brightness automatically"! That fixed it!

Hi .. Not sure if this helps AT ALL or is any good but I did the normal disabling of Adaptive Brightness first but then in your Device Manager / Monitor / the screen should the 'Generic Non-Pnp Monitor'. Disbale that monitor and then restart. Worked for me. I control brightness from my keyboard shortcuts or the Boot Camp Control Panel Slider ...

Hi All,

I see everybody is talking about the Pnp Monitor driver to fix this brightness problem... It didnt work for me... I uninstalled the Light Sensor from device manager and it worked Absol. Fine... Try it... Dont need to reinstall everything.

Light Sensor works fine in MAC but unfortunately no properties for this in Bootcamp Control Panel.
