replacing OSX 10.5.8 and spinning globe nightmare

My powerbook is running OSX 10.5.8 and is plagued with the spinning globe. I have tried every cleanup to no avail. As a last

resort I want to download a new sytem, 10.5.6 . What are the steps for downloading a new system and replacing the old one. Perhaps even

installing an earlier OSX 10.5 might do miracles.

I have adequate memory, 2GB

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

You should first rule out a hard disk failure, and ensure you have adequate backups. The symptoms you describe may presage a hard disk failure, and you should have backups anyway. Start your PowerBook from its original grey System Restore DVD and use Disk Utility to "repair" the disk. If it reports any failures, any repair is likely to be temporary even if it reports success.

Downgrading is only going to be a waste of time. Find out what's wrong and fix it.
