Upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard

If I upgrade my OS from 10.5.8 to 10.6 will my Mac be reformatted, and therefore do I need to create a backup of everything on my Mac?? I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard.

First determine if your Mac will run Snow Leopard:

If it will, order the disk from the Apple online store:

Though installing a new OS should not have any affect on user data, a backup is always prudent to have.

Ciao.
