Q: start up, sim not valid

its the first time startup from the shop, chose language, chose country found my wifi, but it says that the sim is not valid. i got it from vodafone as an insurance replacement.

You can try this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4148, but I would make contact with Vodafone. Did you put your old SIM into the device? It is possible that Vodafone has disabled that SIM, or was there one installed in the device?
