Had the same problem.. Your iMac is too old, just like mine was.  Yours was made in 2006.  You can only go so far as Lion.

So, I just bought a MacBook Air. Seemed like a brilliant piece of hardware until I started to play music on it. The speakers crackle. Crackle! They crackle like old Pioneer speakers in a '69 Camero that you installed yourself on a rainy night with duct tape. OK, that's not on point. What IS on point here is that I didn't assign a password to my Air and when I download the Maverick update in the new (and extremely annoying) app store app for updating, it asks for a password to install. Since I cannot give it one, the whole thing goes back to zero and downloads the whole 5+ gb update again. Well... there's a few words that aren't mentioned in polite company I have for Apple 'round about now.

It makes me happy thinking that Apple is stuck with a couple million iPhone 5Cs because they were too stupid to understand the market.

The admin password, optional, for your Mac, and the password for your Apple ID are two different things.

All Apple IDs require a password. If you can't remember your Apple ID password, you can go here: https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/

An Apple ID, with password, is required to purchase software, music, movies, etc.

Your Mac's Admin password, if you assign one, is required to install software on your Mac. If you didn't assign an Admin password, then you enter nothing when it's requested, and then hit Enter.

Note, the App Store is not new, it's been around for over 2 years.

It won't accept my Apple ID password either. What's really frustrating is that it doesn't retain the download after the password error. I have to re-download the entire 5+ GB Maverick update again just to type in the password again only to have it fail again and re-download it again... you see where I'm going with that? ;-)

Note, using the App Store system and software upgrades is something new to me. Worked better when you just checked for updates and installed them from the updater. Everything has to be from some sort of marketplace now I guess.

    ***UPDATE***

I've just tried it again and here is the exact terminology of the error message: "Your password is incorrect. Please reenter you administrator password." So, it's not an Apple ID issue, it's an admin pw issue. Like I said, I set up my Air with no admin pw. I guess I need to go and set up an admin pw and re-download the thing again and try again. Rrrrrgh.

RE: Issues Downloading OS X Mavericks

    Hi,

Am having difficulties downloading (let alone installing) Mavericks on my iMac (10.7.5). I click download and I see the Mavericks icon in the Launch pad. However, the progress bar does not move - its stuck at the biginning. After about 5 minutes, I get the following message: "The application could not be downloaded. The application you tried to download could not be downloaded. Check your internet connection and try again"

    I have tried the following:

    1. Signing in/out of the App Store

    2. Downloading other apps from the App Store:

Result - I was able to download twitter and mint. It seems the problem is just with Mavericks.

    3. Upgraded my Mac Book Pro (10.8) using the same internet connection (wireless)

Result - Upgraded with no problems at all; So, not an issue with my internet connection.

    4. Performed a Disk Repair (Command+R at startup....etc).

Result - Drive is ok/no issues found. However, still having the same issues with Mavericks.

    5. Reinstalled OSX 10.7.5 (Command+R at startup....etc).

Result - Reinstall successful. However, still having the same issues with Mavericks.

    6. Even tried Hotspot Shield (VPN solution I dug up somewhere), but to no avail.

    Anyone, help!!

I wish I had your problem.  Mavericks is causing me fits.  All of my PDF files that I had in iBooks are gone.

RE: Issues Downloading OS X Mavericks (update)

Finally! Performed my second re-install of OS X Lion (10.7.5) [formatted the Mac HD this time] and it worked! Took a very long time to re-install Lion and to download Mavericks, but it worked.

Still had the issue where the progress bar wasnt moving at the beginning (probably because the download was taking long, so the Progress bar wasnt moving perceptively.). But unlike last time, I did not get the message "This application could not be downloaded...." (I was getting this error message after 5 min of attempted download)

Help!  I starting dowloading Mavericks.  I clicked "Free Upgrade" and then it started downloading. The button status changed to "downloading" However, I had to leave work and go home.  When I got home it froze.  So I restarted my computer and clicked "Free Upgrade" again.  Now it turns to a gray "download" box.  No matter how many times I click on it, nothing happens.  I went into purchases.  Same thing:  the gray "download" box/button.  Again no matter how many times I click on it, it just stays gray and says "download"  I cannot get it to tell me it is downloading anymore.

To make matters worse. I can no longer purchase an older version of keynote that will work on my computer.  I must download mavericks.  Very frustrated.

I even got an email from apple alerting me I had downloaded Mavericks.  Except I haven't.  How annoying.  Any advice on how to troubleshoot this.  I have OS 7.5 at the moment and what I really want right now is Keynote.

This is a copy of the email I got.  But I never was successful in the download.  Now just an inactive gray "download" button.  How can I undo my "download" so I can trigger the computer to start the download again... hopefully so it will work this time.

    Dear XXXXX

Your Apple ID XXXXXX  was just used to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID. You may also be receiving this email if you reset your password since your last purchase.

This download was initiated from Japan.

If you initiated this download, you can disregard this email. It was only sent to alert you in case you did not initiate the download yourself.

If you did not initiate this download, we recommend that you go toiforgot.apple.com to change your password, then see Apple ID: Tips for protecting the security of your account for further assistance.

    Regards,
    Apple

I succeeded to downloaded Mavericks to my Mac Book Air with OS Lion using this procedure:

    - Open App Store and click "Check for Unfinished Downloads" in the "Store" menu.

    - Then go to "Purchases" in the same "Store" menu; you should see Mavericks in the first line.

    - Click "Sign Out" in the same "Store" menu before clicking "Download" Mavericks in the Purchases window.

    - Then click Mavericks to the left of the just clicked "Download". You should see the word Downloading in the bar under the Mavericks app icon, which indicates that the Downloading has started. It took me a couple of hours to complete the 5 Gb, and another hour to complete the installation.

    - The downloading may be monitored with the "Activity Monitor.app" in the Utilities folder in Applications.  By selecting Network, it will show full activity; and you will see the data received increasing.

Happy installation for all of you,,,

Thank you atrenqua.  I will try this.  In my readings, I found someone advising that it is better to wait one round out unless we need to upgrade immediately.  I might delay my purchase of Keynote.  I still find it frustrating that an older version would not be available.

I actually have two computers.  My Macbook Pro Laptop and a Macbook Air.  I have also read that once you successfully download on one, you can manually move the downloader app  via USB / dropbox etc and download to a different computer in this fashion.

You can copy the installer, but keep in mind that once you run it, it will delete itself from teh Applications folder, so if you are going to copy it form one machine to another, you will need to do that before you install it on the first machine.  If you don't the installation will delete the installer and you won't be able to copy it.
