I have the disc to the original iworks dating back to 2008/2009. I am wondering if i will get a free upgrade to the new iworks apps that has been presented today at the event? Instead of paying $20 per app.

No, the new free versions are only available for new hardware purchases made on or after Oct. 1, 2013, purchased with OS X Mavericks pre-installed.
For the rest of us, they are paid upgrades still.
Check the fine print on the bottom of any of the "Apps" pages at http://www.apple.com/mac/ to see where I took that info from.
Well...ill be sticking to my office 2011 then.
