I am running an iMac on OS X 10.5.8. (+ Safari 5.0.6) Can I upgrade to Marvericks as announced today as free for older users?

Sorry, but you need at least 10.6 to upgrade.

Note that your iMac must be a mid-2007 model or newer as well.

I purchased my iMac in May of 2007-is this considered mid-2007 or newer?
