Advice to anyone else who is about to install OS X 10.9: (1) BACK UP!  (2) Use Disk Utility to do a "Verify Disk" on the boot volume to assure that the disk doesn't have hidden corruption.

    Hi stevejobsfan0123,

While I wait for Mavericks to download here are some notes I took during Craig Federighi's presentation and from an earlier reading of the OS X Mavericks Core Technologies Overview.

Mavericks has many other new features but these are the ones I find particularly attractive.

In addition to the many improvements already incorporated in Mountain Lion, OS X "Mavericks" introduces the following:

Power and other resource efficiency improvements should result in longer battery life:

    • Safari Power Saver
    • iTunes HD playback
    • App Nap
    • Timer coalescing
    • dynamic video memory allocation
    • OpenCL (2x faster image processing)
    • Dynamic memory compression results in potential 50% memory resource utilization improvement.

All these features should result in improved performance on older or more resource-limited Macs. This is a first in Apple’s entire history, and it's free - another first.

    New Finder features

    • Finder tabs
    • tags (searchable)

    New / updated programs

    • Maps with multitouch gestures
    • iBooks with interactive graphics and iWork integration
    • Updates to Safari (faster, new tracking prevention features) and Calendar

    iCloud Keychain

    • Seamless password sharing among devices

    Improvements to Notifications

    • Respond to Messages within notifications

First I'd try booting into "safe mode".  If that doesn't help, boot with the "command" and "R" keys held down to enter recovery mode.

I'll presume that you're in the App Store application when that happens.  Try pressing command-R to refresh the screen to see if that causes the download progress bar to appeara.

Currently have installed Mavericks on a 2011 Mini Server

(typing this on it now) and have seen no issues at this

point in time.  Apps tested and function as usual (pre 10.9):

         -Parallels Desktop 9 (9.0.23136.932290)

                 Win8.1 and Win7 VMs

         -Adobe Photoshop CS6 (13.0.5)

         -Libre Office 4.1.2.3 OOO410(Build:3)

        -iTunes 11.1.2

         -Microchip MPLAB-X

         -also Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc.

Also, iPhone 4S with iOS 7.0.2 still syncs without issue.

Install just completed on my 2011 13" 2.7GHz MBP.

Will be checking that out now.

FWIW, things do seem just a bit snappier on Mavericks.

He failed to mention it would kill our Macs while trying to upgrade.

    Hi blue5ft3

I doubt stevejobsfan0123 knows anything at all about your Mac, so if you're having trouble please start a new Discussion so that others can help figure out what's wrong with it.

I see that you posted a few responses to other people's problems, one of which mentioned that you used CCleaner. Junk like that can corrupt your Mac to the point that it's sometimes better to start by erasing your Mac completely and installing a new copy of OS X.

However, since you never posted a new discussion with your specific equipment configuration that's only a guess and a less drastic solution probably exists. If you post a new Discussion with your concerns, they will be addressed.

Of the participants here on Apple Support Communities, there are those who want their problems fixed, those who fix them, and those who would prefer to complain. The last category just gets ignored.

No, mine tried to kill itself, but I caught it just before it hit the floor. I gave it a dose of Mavericks and now it is just fine, thanks for asking.

    Pete
