Q: Logic Pro X and Mavericks

For anyone thinking about upgrading to Mavericks...... (OS X 10.9)

Firstly, don't upgrade straight away!!!!!

Only do so if you have full clone backups of your system HD. Use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper! to make a clone of your current  system disk before you try and install Mavericks... and please do not rely on Time Machine backups.. as in the past, these types of backups have no provided full protection after upgrading the OS. Only a decent cloned image of your system drive, that you can easily and quickly restore from, will provide you with that safety net just in case anything goes wrong... so you can just restore from the cloned image and be back where you started from prior to the upgrade to 10.9

Wait a few days until some of the Users here and elsewhere..  have tested out the combination of LPX and the Public Release version of Mavericks.... I know it's very tempting to use the 'latest and greatest' stuff... but if you rely on your current setup in any real sense... hold off and see what the general option is in regards to compatibility with Drivers/Hardware and Software/plugins etc.... and you will save yourself a lot of potential headaches....

The most common issues after performing a major OS X upgrade are;

1) Driver/hardware incompatibility,...... Do not upgrade unless you know for sure your Audio/Midi interfaces have drivers with full Mavericks compatibility, ready for installation. Check with the device's Websites before even thinking about upgrading! No update or comfirmation of working fine? Don't upgrade!!

2) 3rd party apps and plugin incompatibility. Again, wait and confirm any plugins and other apps you use/need are fully 10.9 compatibile.... before upgrading.

3) Initial bugs.... All OS updates will have some bugs in them initially. .. Its the 'nature of the beast'. No matter how much Beta testing is done, bugs do and will slip through the cracks.... So, wait until at least the first couple of bug fixes are released to correct these enevitable issues... before making the transition.

The above is just some friendly advice from someone who has made all of these mistakes in the past (and paid for it!)  It's your choice to follow it or ignore it of course...... but history tells us that those who just charge ahead and upgrade tend to suffer for it later.. Just looking at the hundreds of posts that were made here by users with issues.. after Mountain Lion was released.. willl confirm this....

Cheers..

Logic Pro X, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), Motu UltraLite V3

    Last report for the night....

After spending about 4 hours using 10.9 and LPX 10.0.3 I can report no issues here of any kind using Ultralites and an iConnect Midi2+ All 3rd party plugins worked as they did under 10.8.x.... and i didn't have any issues other than those reported during the first launch of LPX after upgrading to 10.9, when all my plugins were rescanned automatically.

This doesn't mean there won't be issues for others.. as obviously I have been testing using a very limited set of external hardware that, for the most part, tend to be pretty stable, driver wise anyhow...but FWIW, I didn't have any issues myself in general terms after upgrading 10.8 to 10.9... so read into that what you will.

For those thinking about upgrading to 10.9, please take a few minutes and read my first post in this thread.. and check and then double check any drivers for external hardware you have to ensure they are 10.9 compatible first.... because I gather it's nigh on impossible to roll back to 10.8 after upgrading to 10.9 unless you wipe everything out and start again or restore from a cloned image of your 10.8 system disk.

Please also note my comments about reports regarding the 'usual suspects' (M-Audio/Mackie/Novation) in regards to issues with their drivers after upgrading....

Finally, If anyone else comes across any issues with external hardware or plugins, after updating to 10.9 please post them up in this thread...

    Cheers..

Would really love to know if Mavericks is working ok with some of the legacy stuff of Motu, like for example the traveler MK1. Anyone have any feedback on that?

Also really curious to hear if LPX has shown any signs of general improved responsiveness under mavericks on some of the older machine (2010 and under)?

Thanks again Art, truly is helpful what you doing here.

    Chance,

I can confirm Mav and an Ultralite Mk1... is still working fine...

Im not noticing any real difference in performance under Mav compared to under ML..... I tested on a 2011 8GB MMS and a 2008 6GB iMac... LPX behaves and performs much the same under both OS X's as far as I am concerned.

I will be loading it up on one of my bigger systems later today.. 2013 i7 iMac with 32GB... and see if anything changes then...

Overnight reports from my clients produced no surprises or new info, other than what I have already posted... so it's back to testing for me today

Now you know why I gave the advice i did in my first post..... as your experience is not unusual... unfortunately.

    Jim,

See my earlier comments about M-Audio drivers..... At the moment many of their products that require drivers...  are not currently working ion a stable fashion with Mavericks as far as I can tell from feedback from others...

I have not tested the Apogee Duet.. but the website has new 10.9 drivers for it...

    Hello,

Having a Imac almost for 3 years, never had an issue or problems with my M-Audio usb audio/midi "fast track ultra" after upgrading to a new OSX.

Offcourse after updating to Mav. today,I started to search for a sollution why the "fast track ultra" is not working anymore, too late for me, I just discovered this page.

Lets hope that people from AVID are fast with a driver for 10.9, till then no audio and midi for me : (

Wow, what a pro-active post that was Art, hats off to you, this is proper care in the community award material!

Just to add for anyone using Novation gear, it's worth keeping an eye on this page if you are jumping on Mavericks early and have any issues:

You'll get hold of any fixes (Sometimes) months before they appear on the main site.

It's causing major problems in Logic Studio 8. I feel pretty stupid because it has totally ruined my work flow. I submit myself as one of the first casualties.

Can you be more specific as to the issues you are having with LP8 and Mav please?
