Q: Logic Pro X and Mavericks

For anyone thinking about upgrading to Mavericks...... (OS X 10.9)

Firstly, don't upgrade straight away!!!!!

Only do so if you have full clone backups of your system HD. Use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper! to make a clone of your current  system disk before you try and install Mavericks... and please do not rely on Time Machine backups.. as in the past, these types of backups have no provided full protection after upgrading the OS. Only a decent cloned image of your system drive, that you can easily and quickly restore from, will provide you with that safety net just in case anything goes wrong... so you can just restore from the cloned image and be back where you started from prior to the upgrade to 10.9

Wait a few days until some of the Users here and elsewhere..  have tested out the combination of LPX and the Public Release version of Mavericks.... I know it's very tempting to use the 'latest and greatest' stuff... but if you rely on your current setup in any real sense... hold off and see what the general option is in regards to compatibility with Drivers/Hardware and Software/plugins etc.... and you will save yourself a lot of potential headaches....

The most common issues after performing a major OS X upgrade are;

1) Driver/hardware incompatibility,...... Do not upgrade unless you know for sure your Audio/Midi interfaces have drivers with full Mavericks compatibility, ready for installation. Check with the device's Websites before even thinking about upgrading! No update or comfirmation of working fine? Don't upgrade!!

2) 3rd party apps and plugin incompatibility. Again, wait and confirm any plugins and other apps you use/need are fully 10.9 compatibile.... before upgrading.

3) Initial bugs.... All OS updates will have some bugs in them initially. .. Its the 'nature of the beast'. No matter how much Beta testing is done, bugs do and will slip through the cracks.... So, wait until at least the first couple of bug fixes are released to correct these enevitable issues... before making the transition.

The above is just some friendly advice from someone who has made all of these mistakes in the past (and paid for it!)  It's your choice to follow it or ignore it of course...... but history tells us that those who just charge ahead and upgrade tend to suffer for it later.. Just looking at the hundreds of posts that were made here by users with issues.. after Mountain Lion was released.. willl confirm this....

Cheers..

Logic Pro X, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), Motu UltraLite V3

i havent tried on the GM release of Mavericks, but i wasnt able to install and activate melodyne studio in mavericks, just FYI.

Why would you want to try the GM version.. when the Public Release version is available for free? (Or did you mistype and meant something else?)

Note: there are two different GM versions.. the Public Release version is the GM Build 13A603 one and not the first version they released

Sure. The song position bar is turning everything black thet it touches, so as the song is playing, the screen is turning black. i can't edit any position in songs because black lines follow the song position bar in any direction I move it in, making it impossible to see my position on the screen. Thats all I have encountered so far. But, thats enough because I can't get past that to do anything.

    Rosh,

Hard to say..The current driver states it is for 10.8.x and no higher.. but it might work okay..Yamaha tend to be pretty good about their drivers... Anyhow..  I don't have one or know anyone else with one to test... so you might need to try it out for yourself or contact Yamaha and ask them directly.

See my comments in my first post about making a Clone image.... and then you can test it for yourself and if it doesn't work you can quickly roll back to your current setup... and wit until Yamaha release an updated version...

Again, Thanks J.. Nothing out of the norm there... so I wonder what the issue is..

Having said that, Im not surprised if LP8 has issues with Mav.... simply because of it's age....

Did you make a backup clone so you can roll back to your last working setup?

Nope. I sure didn't. I'll wack the machine if I have to. That doesnt matter. All my software is on CD anyway.

Yes.. at this moment, I would probably do that myself and get back to my last working setup and wait see if Apple release any updates but somehow I don't think they will specifically for LP8.. I could be wrong... but past history sort of tells me otherwise...

    Before you do that.....

I have an LP8 setup here which I will be testing under Mav later on tonight.. Let me give it a whirl and see if I get the same issue and Ill let you know..

if you mean simply go back to an earlier OS X.. Nio.. you would need to wipe the HD clean and start again from scratch....

I have a LP8 app I saved.. which i am going to copy over to my Mav rig and run.. and see what hapens.. Will report back in about 30m mins...

Look at this trick! Notice the stripes to their lefts behind the bar which is shrouded in black. SMH! Big let down!

I get a major graphics crash when I launch LP8 under Mav... so you get further than I do..

But... either way...  for me, that means the two simply don't work together (which as i said, doesn't surprise me) and you will need to either update to LPX or roll back to an earlier OS X/LP8 combination.....
