Just woke up to find my second overnight download & installation is still giving the same problem i.e. Some sort of kernel panic that prevents boot. Las time I used safe boot & disk utility to verify & fix disk before reinstall.

Hope it'll be third time lucky I guess otherwise I'll be gong to the first available genius appointment .....

Good luck to all

Downloadind fine, appeared to install just fine.

On reboot into Mavericks, it sits "forever" at the apple gray startup screen with a spinning beachball.

I went to the recovery disk, and re-tan the installer, which downloaded again, installed again... all looks good.

I've gone back to the recovery disk and ran disk utility and repair... no problems. repaired permissions, and still get the spinning beachball.

Exact same story as reststop. After 2nd install attempt gave same gray screen freeze, I shut down, dsconnected peripherals, fired up back into recovery, verified/repaired disks and permissions, and started the download/install all over again. Now waiting. Not confident.

Any successes after this gray-screen-of-death issue???

In my case, it stuck at that less than a minute spot for 30 minutes and then completed. Afterwards, it looped back, did a completing installation for what was supposed to be 7 minutes but lasted much longer. In my case, I think what I did was either put in (when asked) the wrong password for iCloud, or possibly miss the screen where it asked me for the password for iCloud, and that screwed everything up. However, aftre a restart and (thanks to a suggestion from someone up here) Repairing Permissions using Disk Utility, it asked me for the iCloud password again or let me come up with a new one, and that all seemed to work. I think I'm fine now.

But sure, I considered reinstalling the whole thing again.
