Outline View missing in Pages 5.0

Pages looses half of its functionality if you cannot use outling when you write.

I see how to make headings and bulleted lists but no way to collapse and expand them.

Does anyone know if this is still possible? There used to be a menu item called Outline View. It's disappeared.

TIA

Apple users are so polite.

After using Word for decades, a few years ago I decided to make the move and join the wondeful world of Apple word prcessing. I got over the niggles of learning new software and was happy to have made the move.

I had lots of lovely, well organised pages files - you've guessed it - my main use for pages is to use Outline.

So, enthused by the latest Apple presentation, off I trot to the store to spend another few thousand dollars (on top of the 10s of thousands I've spent on Apple products in the past). All very happy - not a problem, great products, systems and software.

I wish someone had taken a photo of my face when I opend my first Pages file on the new system. NO OUTLINE. All of my carefully tierred and organised files are a linea mush.

Sure there's bullets - but that's about 20% of a solution.

Being an Apple user I politely smiled to myself and thought -- I -- must have made a mistake - it must be there somewhere. According to the discussion it isn't.

I've been using Apple since Adam was a lad - this is the first time I've made a contribution to an Apple post. ie the first time I have been REALLY steaming under the collar.

APPLE - SORT THIS OUT - you have some very annoyed customers out here. Outline is a basic function of any decent word processor and has been availble from 'pre-historic' times...

...So, smiling sweetly to myself again. I shall now spend my Sunday morning fiddling with my Apple system to see if I can reinstate my old version of pages - and hope it runs on Mavericks and the new Mac. "Ho Hum, it's an Apple life for me, fun fun fun fun fun fun..."

There is no Outline in Pages v5 (which is a disaster as far as I'm concerned!) so I'm trying to go back to v4 which I want to run on my new Mac.

Beside the v5 (which came with the new Mac but doesn't have Outline) the only other copy I have is v4.1- this copy is on the older Mac - fortunately it works fine on the older Mac which is running Maverick.

So I tried copying v4.1 from the older Mac to the new Mac - but it won't open on the new Mac.

Where can I dowload v4.3 and it load directly onto my new Mac.

Missing outline is a big problem for me. And I want to stay within the Apple universe. Wasting valuable time is what I have my PC for.

I begin my documents on iCloud by dictating into my iPhone, and/or cutting and pasting research I find with my iPad. When I start to organize the document on my Air, outline mode is the perfect tool to sort out stuff.

Also missing is "import style format" which I use when I begin the process of sorting the content on the Air, by pulling the styles formats from a complex Page template I created. Gone, are two important Page functions.

It is close.

"It is not true outlining which allows you to promote"

Yes, you can promote - use a SHIFT TAB

, demote,

Yes, you can demote - use a TAB

fold down

Not sure what you mean here. I haven't found a way to hide lower levels.

and move sections of your text by dragging and dropping.

Yes, you can move sections by dragging and dropping. But drop placement is crucial to avoid accidental demotion/promotion.

Once again, that is NOT outlining.

There is no folding up of tiered text.

There is no auto format according to tiered level.

Dragged and dropped text adopts the number of the level it is dragged to, but not the format, nor the Style.

It behaves just like Lists in Pages '09.

Like most things in Apple's Mavericks software suites, it is programmed for the Can't Tell It's Butter consumer.
