Q: iPhoto 9.5 dropped Mac-to-Mac sharing?

I just installed the latest OSX Mavericks update and iPhoto '11 9.5 and it appears that the old Mac-to-Mac sharing is gone! I don't see a Sharing tab on Preferences any more and none of our other Macs running iPhoto are listed in the sidebar.

If it's really gone, I wonder what Apple expects people to use instead? iCloud doesn't do the job because it's only the last 1000 photos (at best), so you can't see old photos.

I sent a note to the iPhoto group and another one to Tim Cook. I wonder who we should write to to make them return sharing

Here's another description of how to sync your photos to your iOS device via iTunes and a USB cable:

    Hello:

I fail to see how this item belongs to the thread discussed.

It doesn't. That's a spam post. Easy to spot after a while. They set up a new account, search the forum for any thread even vaguely related  and make one or two posts rcommending their junk app and then leave.

My sincere apoologies for my previous post. It was definitely not my intention to write a "spam post." I will be happy to edit or delete it if someone can point me to how to do that.

I confess I'm a neophyte on these forums and I was intending to reply to DaMaik's post with a somewhat cleaned-up version of the technique in the link that he included in his post. I had just written a version of a similar set of steps and included a screen shot in our blog. I thought that clicking "Reply" on DaMaik's post would link my reply to that post, but instead it linked it to the end where it looked like a reply to Shuka's post. I also seached for a way to send a private message to DaMaik with the link, but I can't seem to find a way to do that on this forum either.

(I appreciate that even this post is clutter in the forum, so again my apologies, but I hope it may help some other neophytes to better use the forum. And I didn't intend to make a "new account", I'm actually the author of the original post in this thread, but I accidently used my work account instead of my personal account for the reply.)

Actually that link only refers to using iTunes to sync with iPhoto.  The apps that the site promotes are not mentioned as part of the solution that's presented and have nothing to do with syncing photos.  In this instance I don't see it as spam.

    Happy Holidays

What is really annoying about all the features listed, is that there seem to be no really well thought-through solution for families. There are always many pictures you want to share with your wife, your kids, grandparents etc.

On the other side, there are pictures which don't make sense sharing - from colleagues, business events, white-borad or flip-chart copies etc etc. to the picutres of my student days.

I would expect Apple to come up with some smarter solution for such every day topic like cross-user photo sharing.

I guess that's what Apple thinks Shared Photo Streams are for.  You can select only those you want to have access to those shared streams.

I don't think there's a lot of thinking going on over at Infinite Loop to be honest, Mr Toad. I want to share 45,000 photos between two or three Macs, but Apple "thinks' I shouldn't.

Sharing a tiny fraction of those 45,000 photos has been made into such an incredible, overwhelming task, I'll not bother at all in Mavericks. I'll just stick with the old fashioned but very user friendly Snow Leopard and live in the past. The past is where the future was, until Apple redefined the future and dragged us backwards...

Yeah, I know - confusing isn't it? ;-) The place should be renamed Infinite Loopy.

If those Macs are on the same LAN you can put the library on an external HD and let all users have access to it.

streaming photos (35 GB) over the net is defintely not an option! - Why would Apple remove the sharing option in iPhoto prefs - - ?!

@Old Toad: Many people accessing the library simulltaneously will almost certainly cause havoc. After all, this is not a multi user database! Also, I would NOT want to have everybody fiddling in my carefully setup and organized library. By the way: I'm normally using Aperture and the same new restrictions apply here. However, the library is x-compatible between iPhoto and Aperture. My wife is using iPhoto. In the past, I simply opened the library with iPhoto, selected a project and made it available to her while she was preparing our x-mas calendar on her MacBook Air. Convenience os now over, it seams.
