I can check using disk utility or by using "df -h" under terminal (which yield different results, oddly enough), but I was wondering if Mavericks has the familiar pie chart, just in a different location or activated as a setting.

Activity monitor clearly displays a different graphic - it now shows read/write statistics, but I was curious if I could find a similar graphic to before. The pie chart was a good way to monitor free space...
You can use the ➙ About this Mac ➙More Info ➙ Storage option to view the disk storage usage on your hard drives:
However, clicking on the hard drive and typing Command + i will give you what the pie chart did:
No need to use the Activity Monitor.

Are you talking about available memory? Apple clearly feels it is no longer necessary to monitor that because of Mavericks improvements in memory handling.
I use iStatMenu.

What I don't understand is why the free space number from the Storage option graphic don't match that from Command + i. In particular it appears that the number used for Backups has been added to Free, to come up with the number from Command + i.
(I notice that the example given in the first response has different numbers as well but not due to Backup.)
Backups (Snapshots actually) are free space, they are released to the OS on demand.
