Mavericks Keychain keeps asking to unlock "Local Items" after install

The use of Terminal to delete the file as you advised at the end worked for me.

So I called apple support. Apple has 90-days of free support for any new software. It is a known issue, but the support guys didn't know why it is caused. The solution is to remove the folder with a long alpha-numeric name inside the Keychains folder and restart the machine. Upon restart a new folder with alpha-numeric name will be created and you should be good to go. The Keychains folder is in the Library folder. For command line lovers:

1) ~/Library/Keychains/

2) MOVE the alpha-numeric folder to another location

3) restart the machine

4) you should be good to go, if not call apple care support.

For GUI loving people, this is what you can do:

1) Go to the Finder

2) Click on Go

3) Hold down the option key (not the command key). You should see "Library" appear underneath Home.

4) While holding down the option key, click on the Library (if you let go of option, Library folder will dissappear from the drop down).

5) Go inside Keychains folder

6) Move the alpha-numeric folder to, say, desktop (or any other location of your choice)

7) Restart

8) Upon relogin, you should be good to go. The OS will create another long alpha-numeric folder in Keychains folder.

9) You can delete the folder that you moved, or keep it, or do whatever you like with it, but DO NOT move it back to the Keychains folder.

10) if this doesn't work, I suggest you call apple care support.

Its funny the update was supposed to fix that problem. Although I didn't have the problem before I updated. The update didn't bother my mini or imac, only my 13" MBP.

Identical problem.

I had recently installed Mavericks in a new I7mac when after a restart it suddenly started asking for all sorts of passwords to access the keychain, password was not accepted and the system began to hang preventing me from doing anything else. Eventually was forced to revert back to 10.8.7 to gain control. Tried most things from permissions to resetting password etc., but something appeared to have lost the link.

Conclusion, something in Mavericks causes a loss of leychain links, possibly connected with icloud? Not worth fiddling about with Mavericks, will leave it to Apple to do something right for a change....

Any suggestions?

Actually I found pacote-san's advice really helpful. I had the same problem except on second restart something went wrong and totally screwed up my MacBook Pro. I could not open keychain or iCloud settings so I had to take his advice and it worked perfectly. I restarted, logged in fine, and then it prompted me to configure iCloud. I put in the password and set it up and got almost all of my password data back into keychain even after deleting it from ~/Library/KeyChain.

Problem solved...

Apple's solution is the same solution mentioned here: delete the Local Items folder to allow Local Items keychain to reset. It's all the same.

The only thing I would add is that having accepted Maverick 10.9.1 update earlier tonight when I tried to log in after it had been applied I got this "Local Items" keychain pop up which blocked my attempted log in.

It was only when I rebooted that I was able to login and then apply the fix http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5362 which fortunately worked.

Worked perfectly, thank you very much! Although I hoped that times of terminal debugging were over after turning to Mac...:D
