Q: Is Mavericks making your machine run slow?

I downloaded Mavericks this afternoon and installed it on my iMac i7 24GB RAM Everything seems to be slow in transitions from one app to another and many apps stall for severeal minutes as if the processor is playing catch-up. Thoughts? Should I just reinstall the update?

Moving your previous mail folder was not the right thing to do if you want to keep all your old mail folders intact.

You should have performed the file permission and disk checks instead.

Now that you have recreated the mail accounts, a different unique identifier would have been assigned so when you moved the mail folder back they are not recogised as past of the new accounts.

You have a few of options now

    1) Assumming you didn't delete the emails from your gmail account, you can retrieve them if you had set up your account as type IMAP.

    2) Import each of the mail boxes from the original V2 folder that you moved away by going to the menu of Mail - File -> Import Mailboxes. Select the original mailboxes to import the old mail. It will be tedious if you had a lot of mail folders.

    3) Fix the file problems in your original V2 folder and then move it back to where it was. You will have to download the most recent new mails after that.

You could have at least translated the error message into english.....

In any case it could have been an existing disk problem all along that you didn't know of....

It sounds to me like the current harddisk may could be failing so back up everything immediately before doing anything else.

Try doing a Verify Disk with Disk Utility in Recovery Mode first before verifying file permissions.

You can also try other maintenance software like Techtool Pro and do a full surface scan.

Post the Verify Disk results in a different thread.

I was having serious performance issues after upgrading to Mavericks. I read somewhere to reboot into safe mode by holding Control R and using Disk Utilities to Repair the Disk and Repair Disk Permissions. About half an hour later I rebooted again and everything is working great.  I would highly recommend this.

I've always repaired permissions weekly even though it usually wasn't necessary.  Now that has become so, it doesn't seem to help at all.

The most annoying issue is the lag on typing. Sometimes I can go on typing an entire phrase before the characters show up on the screen.

Apple really needs to do something. I really hope they are working like mad to fix all those issues.

Nope.  If anything, my machine has become much smoother and more responsive.   It's aging, but still a powerful machine.  MacPro 3,1 w/ 32GB memory.

Yep - Marvericks has completely disabled my iMac27 2011. It's like trying to run through treacle.

The boot up you're referring is not Safe Mode: it's recovery Mode. Safe Mode boot up is simply holding down the shift key. They are two different things.  :-)

Bought a Macbook Air 13 last week and upgraded to Maverick and scrolling and windows resizing is slow on Safari and Chrome. Don't know if it's because of Maverick or my Mac.... Ironicly, Autocad runs very smoothly.

I sped up Safari by Disabling JavaScript (Develop Menu).

At least I think that was why Safari isn't as slow as before.

    Coud just be a coincidence.

It is more often Flash, which might be called by a JavaScript which may be why you see an improvement.

Make sure you have the most current version of the Flash Player.

I use a Safari extension called Click-to-plugin. It blocks all plugins unless I click on them. You can configure it to allow them to run automatically on a per-site basis.

Click-to-Flash does the same, but only for Flash plugins.

They will also automatically substitute the HTML5 version instead of Flash, if it is available.

Welp... reporting my situation. Upgrading to 16GB RAM actually solved my performance problem. Apple claims the minimum requirements are 2GB RAM but even then it will be laggy with 4GB RAM. It is quite bad that an OS needs that much memory just for basic desktop functions no matter how much you guys try to justify it. Just... no. It also goes against the system requirements described above.

Thats quite ugly from the perspective of someone who works in IT with many different operating systems. Even Windows has achieved a small and tight memory footprint nowadays and thats comming from an Unix fanboy.

So as I've said before its like I'm throwing hardware to solve a software issue. One thing that I've noticed is that my system doesn't compress memory anymore. Perhaps the act of compressing/decompressing memory was causing all the beachballing.

It should be easy to show it through DTrace and the right information/system calls to watch for. I think its on the hands of the Apple devs to solve the issue.

However... it didn't solve the iTunes hiccups problems. I'm still having sound interruptions and "usbmuxd" related errors. This is probably a separated bug involving iTunes and iPhone sync.

Thanks for the input.  I think I'm going to have to increase my RAM as well.  I've tried everything I've come across on these boards and still applications are hanging, crashing, and are all terribly slow.  Maybe this is a clever way to sell more iMacs.  Mine has a few years on it and now faced with a cash investment I may as well invest in a new model.

Sorry, James, but I wouldn't pin all your hopes on more RAM. My iMac is maxed out with 32 GB's and is stil very slow and unresponsive in certain areas. In fact, Safari appears to require  more RAM in Mavericks than ML! But that seems to balance out, if I have more apps open; dynamic allocation, I guess. Starting up and connecting to the internet from startup is particularly frustrating. More RAM might work for some, but certainly not myself.

Never experienced an Apple OS with so many puzzling issues.

I anxiously await  revisions to fix this
