Q: Is Mavericks making your machine run slow?

I downloaded Mavericks this afternoon and installed it on my iMac i7 24GB RAM Everything seems to be slow in transitions from one app to another and many apps stall for severeal minutes as if the processor is playing catch-up. Thoughts? Should I just reinstall the update?

Also download onyx for mavericks from titanium software and execute all the cleaning menus.

I did this prior to installation of mavericks and have suffered non of the ill affects everybody seems to be. I have also done this on more than one mac with entirely predictable results.

Thanks, Ivan. I will try this on a brand new Macbook Pro! I wonder if Onyx might work restrspectively. ie: install it, do the routines, then reinstall Mavericks....?

I was having serious issues on my 2011 Macbook Air. Problems with all of the Apps (mail, safari, app store, itunes). I did some digging on old threads, and found something about repairing keychains.

It totally worked. Everything is back to normal now, and memory usage for all of the apple apps is down.

    In utilities, open Keychain Access.

In the Keychain Access menu, select Keychain First Aid.

Click repair, put in your password, click start.

The window with the progress on my computer went crazy, repairing keychains so fast I couldn't read anything. This went on for about 5 minutes (during which I got a 'program not responding'), but when it stopped, it said the keychains were repaired. Now everything is better.

Yes, I am experiencing the same problems. Just baught a brand new iMac 27" and it runs mega slow. Especially design apps like Photoshop, Illustrator and C4D.

    Bugs too. >.<

Pretty annoyed with apple! I've heard a lot of prosumers (i.e. graphic/web designers) feeling the same way.

You must be running something that is slowing your Mac down. All five Macs in my studios are flying along with Mavericks. What third party apps are you running?

    Cheers

I started running Mavericks on my early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.0 GHz i7, 4 Gig RAM), and, after Apple support helped me clear up a problem where the Finder was continually crashing, found that it seems to run somewhat slower than ML had, as well as running down the battery faster. As an example, when I get a mail notification, the sound happens 2-4 seconds after the notification has disappeared. I'm also seeing more beachballs than I'm used to.

Third party apps include Office 2011, Firefox, MacVector, MacPyMol, Papers, and a few others downloaded from the MacApp Store. However, it still runs slow when I am only using Apple Apps.

I had the same problem and found Console in the Utilities folder to be helpful.  When I ran it, I saw endless error messages from my RSSbot app, which apparently had hung.  Once I force quit it, everything ran much better!

Just wanted to say that my problem was fixed by the Repair Permissions as well. There is obviously a problem with the Mavericks install since so many are having this issue.

+1. Repair Permissions sorted my mid 2010 MBP 2.4GHZ 4MB. No need to re-install unless you really feel the need to.

Startup is now 5min 36 seconds. To open iPhoto, iMovie pages now 3 minutes 9 seconds consistantly for 5 days.

Apple care says it takes a few days for laptop to re-index files then will work faster.

So far it appears that Apple is spending more on BS propoganda than on actually building and supporting their products.

You have serious problems here. Download and run

    http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip

and post back the output results.

    Pete,

I like Etrecheck. I have upgraded two machines, a MBP 6,2 and a MacPro Desktop 3,1. I'm about to do my MacMini Server and my experience has given me pause. The MacPro is now outlandishly slow is keyboard response, Finder responsiveness more generally, and application loading specifically. It's simply ridiculous. I'm willing to agree that perhaps my migration is not good, but what to do now?

    Start over?

    Put a band-aid on what's been done?

Would appreciate your advice on either of the installs, here one of them. Here's the EtreMBP result (it should be the better of the two). I'll post back the results of the Mac Pro, ltr.

I would certainly uninstall Retrospect,Black-Magic design and AirParrot. Other things I have highlighted and underlined, such as ClamXav you will need to make sure they are up to date and that the updates are Maverick compatable.

When uninstalling Retrospect make sure you uninstall it completely according to the developers website instructions. Then restart.

    Cheers

Just an FYI, there have been no reported incompatibilities identified with ClamXav 2.6.1 and Mavericks to date, so if that turns out to be an issue I'm sure Mark, the developer, would like to know about it.

No, the suggestion for ClamX was to check that there had not been an update for it.

"Other things I have highlighted and underlined, such as ClamXav you will need to make sure they are up to date and that the updates are Maverick compatable."

I have no issue with ClamXav, just checking that the OP is up to date. With all the other Third Party Apps they have running, who knows what conflicts he may encounter.

But I respect what you are saying.

Good to know, MM. I've installed it and OnyX and honestly haven't noticed too much of an improvement. Frankly, I'ma little scared of OnyX: it's a bit deep for an idiot like me, but I managed to grasp some basics. I'm not unhappy with Mavericks to the degree of some unfortunate people, but I have to say that I'm a little disappionted with the slowness factor, relating to certain Apple ,er apps. It's not disastrous, but I still keep thinking that maybe I should reinstall.

The other half of me says wait on the revisions, though I didn't notice any improvement to Mail. If anything, it got a little worse for a time.

BTW, love your punning pseudonym, lol !
