Start up Problem

Attempting Safe Boot of MacBook that powers up but doesn't go beyond white/grey screen with apple logo.

Safe Boot stops with this message - launch_msg(): Socket is not connected.

Tried this by referencing info at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570

What to do next? Apple link suggests reset NVRAM/PRAM.

MacBook (13-inch), Mac OS X (10.6.8)
