Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

It does not work. For every new window you will have to manually hide the sidebar and menubar. 😐

Heres what I get you are saying….

1. un-check ’Open folder in tabs….”

2.If you do command option t, it will hide the sidebar and the tool bar at top, then when you dbl clk on a folder, it opens the folder in a new window. yes.

(however pulling the window wider to the left hiding the sidebar, still leaves the top tool bar etc and then it does not work, this trick)

BUT….

the new folder window that is opened is formatted now again w the sidebar and tool bar at top, and then dbl clicking on a folder in that kind of window, does not allow a new separate window to open. so it is only a “1 level” of separage-window-opening that way, right?

so I dont really get why we are saying it works. It only works if you cmd option t all your windows one by one….right, so that any window you open would than be configured w no sidebar and not tool bar thus allow dbl clking to open separte windows?

OR....maybe there is a way one can one make it a default that the windows all have the 'no sidebar and no tool bar' style, like you could in Snow Leopard?

In Snow Leopard, once you made 1 window like that, all the subsequent windows would be like that.

The whole tab thing, like WH is saying, is quite another issue.

Personally, when i did a search on google for this topic of tabs it brought me to this discussion. I guess I should have looked at the title of the discussion.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?

A work around is to hold down the "command" key when opening a folder. This will open that folder's contents into a new (different) window like previous OSX did.

Well, I went through automator, and made every windows default (whatever you would like to call, no sidebar or tool bar). Then, I just set the original folder to "Set default", and now they all open (in a seperate window) in the eact same format as the original.

I'm really sorry you're having issues with my solution. Many others seem to have it working as I do :/

Make which ever folder you want (format wise) the default folder 🙂 it will work

I posted what worked for me. I've been doing it since I upgraded, and it's worked just fine. My God. I'm sorry it doesn't work for everyone.

Well, I thought this "solution" wasn't even worth mentioning.

Hiding the toolbar always resulted in this borderless windows that would only open separate sub-folder-windows.

This is nothing new!

In fact, if you do it like that, you will now all use your Macs like my father (who could never stand the sidebar since it's intrpduction in 2003).

Hence you are discussing about a behavior that hasn't even been touched for 10 years now!

Also, some of you explain it the wrong way: In order to make your window borderless, you just have to hide it's toolbar, not the sidebar! The latter will automatically be gone then!

I don't want crippled windows, I want the real thing!

Like windows worked in OS 9, OS 10, OS 10.1, OS 10.2, and OS 10.3! (After that, Apple already began moving away from the traditional window-conventions of Mac OS)

Hi..ok, here is the Automator window - see screen grab: Files and folders \ Set folder Views:...you just unchecked 'show toolbar' and uncheck sidebar width" too? and checked 'apply changes to sub-folders' -which reads in red that the sub folder thing could take a long time?

what do you think?
