Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

No kidding, this is beyond stupid.  I want to know who approved this!  Steve Jobs would never have ok'd this idiotic change.  Why would you want to mess with this most BASIC of functions?  This is the absolute most basic thing a Finder does, and they removed it???  Wow, I'm seriously thinking about going backt o Mountain Lion and be done with this stupidity, don't even care if there will be no future updates to Mountain Lion.  Maverick is useless to me now.  I undertand Apple like to control their ecosystem, but make me have to hold a buttom down to open a new window? hahahaha, Apple you really really really disappoint me that this even got past the decision making phase.

Keep up the complaints to Apple regarding this ridiculous way of how we are no longer able to open a new folder by doubling clicking. Also, the way the 'Go' menu works in the menu bar when opening folders needs to be put back to how it was.

Must go to another area of the forum now to complain, again, about the ridiculous colour dots that have replaced colour labels.

Adding to the chorus and summarizing preceding posts...in case anyone who matters at Apple peruses these things...opening a folder in a new window should work like it used to (via double click, but also via Command-O or even choosing Open from the File menu). A preference is needed to restore this basic behavior. I did file this complaint/suggestion with Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/  Everyone who needs this changed should do the same. The best workaround so far appears to be turning off "Open Folders in Tabs" in Finder Prefs, then command-double click on a folder to open it in a new window. (Drawbacks include needing 2 hands, possibility of selection errors, and the loss of decades of workflow fluency.)

What I don't understand is this whole Internet Explorification of the Finder.  Hello, a finder is different than a browser.  You don't have tons of files to move/copy/paste unlike a bunch of web pages in a tabbed structure.  While it makes total sense to use a tabbed infrastructure for browsing web pages, it is absolute lunacy to "explorify" the Finder.  I don't want to "browse" my files like I browse the web.  I can't believe this basic concept is lost on Apple.  What's next?  removing the "copy" function because "cut" does the same thing?  Unless, this get fixed, this is a deal breaker.  I can live without the so called Maverick improvements, their benefits do not outweigh this annoying change.

Can we please get back to the topic,

this thread is not for iOS and not for people who likes folders in tabs or other things.

We all knew that we can open folder in new windows by holding a modifier key.

But this is not, what we like. Much of us are old and longtime Apple users.

We dont want to change any thing in the new tab view, but we would like a setting to use the old behavior

in the finder prefs. This change is extremely easy to realize.

If anyone likes other thing, nice to hear, but please stay away from this discussion.

Its annoying to explain every 10 messages the same.

    Thank you so much.

I think the biggest reasons that the latest os upgrades were free was because for stuff just like this.  In order to merge the iPhone/iPad/Mac experences together, they'd have to make some unpopular choices.  Along with the finder window change, I noticed a more subtle change in Safari: when you right click a link, the "open in new tab" and "open in new window" selections are switched.  I've been opening things in new tabs all day.  I also just noticed that spell check isn't working. sjnnj Yeah, not working.

IMO, the Mavericks Finder bug is ...

The previous 'FinderSpawnWindow' behavior should be supported by doing this at the command line:

    > defaults delete com.apple.finder FinderSpawnTab

    > defaults write com.apple.finder FinderSpawnWindow -bool true

It you issue those commands, the Mavericks Finder should give the user the previous double-click automatically opens a new folder window *without* the user needing to hold down the CMD key.

If you issue those commands, the Mavericks Finder actually behaves even more oddly in that it *does not* open folders in a new window *and* it does not open folders in a tab even though after changing those prefs the Finder defaults it's UI preferences to show 'Open folders in tabs instead of new windows' as enabled.

Yes, this has been filed as a bug with Apple.

    Arghh... I interpreted this as:

The previous 'FinderSpawnWindow' behavior should be supported by doing this at the command line:

    > defaults delete com.apple.finder FinderSpawnTab

    > defaults write com.apple.finder FinderSpawnWindow -bool true

But that's not true... I agree now that THIS is the bug... It SHOULD HAVE WORKED, but it doesn't...

It does manipulate the 'Open Folders in Tabs instead of new windows' flag but new windows don't show when double-clicking on a folder. 8-(

Hide "Side Bar" and your "Toolbar". It works perfectly for me. As long as everything is hidden, everything opens in a new window (without having to hold Cmd or anything).

    Hope that helps.

Hollanda - that is amazing.  It certainly is a help, and a much better situation than I was understanding.

Thanks for explaining that trick.  How did you know about it??

Hollanda, that is freaky.  But it works.  However, I've grown to like my Sidebar, and you can't show the Sidebar without showing the Toolbar [note: why should that be required??]. But thanks for finding and reporting this ... which obviously makes it seem more like a bug than ever before.

Because I'm 22, impatient, and can't stand my sidebar haha So for the last month, everything has opened in a new finder window, until I started playing with the new labels on the sidebar.  I noticed nothing would work, read that Apple took the setting away, still didn't have any intrest in the new sidebar, so I hid it. Then everything started working again lol

So happy it worked for you

For anyone else reading, I forgot to mention, you have to un check the setting in Finder first.

It does not work. For every new window you will have to manually hide the sidebar and menubar.
